Actually we can....and do. I mean, we crown the super bowl winner the best team in football though other places do play football

All other playoffs in Div 1 do not have an absolute requirement to get into them. Basketball, baseball, and softball all have many ways of getting into them that do not involve winning your conference.
In fact, from 1985 to 2017, the majority of teams to win the national championship in basketball LOST their conference tournaments. (14 won, 15 lost - of the 15, only 6 made the final game for their conference). Villanova did bring that back up to a 50/50 split, but it should be noted that they did not win the regular season in their conference - Xavier did.

That may be a fair but im not concerned about the titling. I contend the expansion to four was simply increasing the field (doubling it) to prevent an error of omitting the best two teams. Not to necessarily find the 4th best team. Yes they want the best possible four but they nearly guarantee having 1 and 2. So playoff v invitational??
