Lonnie - I think Bobby Bentley to AU as OC makes sense for several reasons, and most have to do with Gus being on the hot seat.

Potential hires for OC can see Gus may only have one year unless he wins big next year. That takes out all good OC’s who have better options working for coaches in a more stable situation. Even the guarantee of a 3 year contract would keep these OC’s from taking the job because getting canned after one year is not a resume builder and it’s hard on the family.

So now Gus is looking for hires that would consider the job in spite of the risk. These are guys who would listen because it would mean a huge pay increase and the opportunity to add “OC at a P5” school on their resume.

So because Gus has to look for a guy like the above, Gus is also taking a risk because these candidates won’t come with a proven track record. Gus will lean towards a guy he has some comfort with.

I think there is only one guy that makes sense. This guy has a proven track record of running high powered offenses at the high school level and winning numerous state championships. He has previously worked with Gus at Auburn. He is currently only making about $350,000 as a rb coach. He currently coaches in the SEC so he knows the landscape and demands of the conference.

I think Bobby Bentley ticks a lot of boxes for Gus, given that Gus is not in a position to pull a proven OC from another school. I also think BB would take the job for the raise and the title.

I do think AU has to give BB at least a multi year guarantee. I don’t think he takes the job for just one year of pay. So if what some are saying is true, that AU is not allowing Gus to offer multi year deals to assistants, then AU is definitively trying to sabatoge Gus so he’ll quit.

Solid take. It'll be interesting to see how much or little Gus gives him autonomy. He is going to be hamstrung enough as it is with a absolutely terrible offensive line... maybe the worst in P5, particularly at the tackle position.
