Nearly every Georgia male athlete was also in the ROTC program, and many went to the military. Those that graduated went as officers or senior enlisted men.

My grandfather started college in 1944 and was 16 years old. Freshman weren’t necessarily 18 years old at the time of WWII

Until about the 1952-53 school year in Georgia, school was only 11 grades. You were a freshman in the 8th grade and a senior in the 11th. I have a great-aunt who was born in 1935. She was set to graduate in 1952, but the state changed it to 12 years of school for graduation, so she said eff that, and never went back.

So, it was pretty common in Ga. for 16 and 17 year olds to be incoming freshman during WWII.
