I've never understood the reasoning behind that. If I'm going to plow that much money into building a home I don't want my neighbors to be close enough they can reach out their window and touch my house.

The neighborhood was built in the 20s when houses were smaller. If you want to expand your home you have to do it in that small area.

The reason why is because it is a great historic area with a close-knit community. The properties also retain their values.
