Maybe Pass-The-Buck-Gus is willing to wreck the teenage 2nd best kicking recruit in the country to save his 52 year old arse the embarrassment of punting like a normal coach.

Feels like we haven't punted it when in 40-55yd FG range in years

Disagree with this assertion. Think we've just had kickers that could reliably hit from that range lately where before we most likely punt.
I wouldn't kick many 50+ FGs if I'm hitting at 26%, but 45% I'm gonna go for it a lot more.
