I don't find it surprising at all.
eaTme has really not been relevant in football and has a huge "little brother" syndrome from all those years in the SWC and Big XII. They desperately want to be something that they have really never been.
They are like the homely girl who attaches herself to the hot, popular girl. Maybe they'll get a castoff but still they get some recognition just by association.
If you can't accomplish it on your own, try to ride someone's coattails.
