Just about all of the mercenaries at the Alamo we’re from the SE. The only “ Texans” at the time were Mexicans. If they weren’t Mexicans they hadn’t been in the area long.

It’s awfully funny how important the Alamo is in Texas lore considering it was about as big a military blunder as man has ever seen. Travis was a South Carolinian and there ain’t a more emotional, hysterical fool committed to a lost cause than a South Carolinian.....witness the number of fans in Columbia rooting for a team that makes the Chicago Cubs look like a winning dynasty.

San Antonio was to far from Anglo Texas and too close to Mexico. The people of the area were more sympathetic to the Mexican government than the Texan. In fact the only reason they were there in the first place is because one old boy, who felt slighted by the Mexican Government, shamed them into attacking and the Mexicans, knowing how unimportant San Antonio was, ran off. The Texans, thinking they had won the war, were shocked when Houston suggested they fall back to lines closer to Anglo Texas....and, in typical Texan fashion, refused to do what they were ordered to do because they weren’t going to be told what to do! Thus they died for NOTHING.....and in fact, through sheer Texas hard headed ignorance placed the Republics victory in Jeopardy because they died and men were at a premium. Had they fallen back to Anglo Texas like they were ordered they would have lived to have seen the actual defeat of the Mexicans outside of Houston. So it was hysterical, emotional Southeners, many from South Carolina, who love nothing better than a lost cause, and hard headed ignorant Texans who won’t be told what to do no matter what the consequences who fought and died for ABSOLUTELY NOTHING at the Alamo.....it wasn’t bravery it was foolishness.....and it is the very essence of everything that is Baja Oklahoma......

While at the time it was an untenable position the battle itself became a delaying action that bought Houston time and wore down the Mexican conscripts.

Not to mention it gave a intangible bloodlust to the Texian army that would rout the Mexicans at San Jacinto.

It was only a matter of time before the Martin Van Buren wing of the Democrats or Henry Clay Whigs showed up here to badmouth Texas expansion. It had to happen.

We don't care. Manifest Destiny, brother.
