Bama really can afford to not have a great defense this year

How's that usually work out for them?

But who has a great defense this year?

Not OSU: snicker
Not Clemson - very good DL talent, not playing like it. Bad back 7.
Not ND: snicker
Not UGA: mediocre DL, some talent but mostly inexperienced elsewhere. They haven't had a good secondary yet under Kirby.
Not OU or WVU: snicker
Not Tex: though not in the same category as OU or WVU, they are not a big time defense.

Bama's defense will not be great but it is now above average and will improve significantly before years' end. Bama's O is the best in the country by far.
