I watched him in the last scrimmage before the season started and he struck the ball considerably better than now. He did have one shank when punting out of the end zone with Saban standing about 2 feet away from him.

Right now, his drops are all over the place!! This leads to not striking the ball cleanly. Add to that that when he is striking it, it is at a different point in his leg swing each time. The whipping action in his leg is maxed out or hasn't reached full potential at contact. Think of one of those old golf games on some game console. If you hit the button too soon, you slice, hit it too late, you hook. Similar concept here.
