Skynet will happen very subtly. A self-aware AI that can take over a computer-connected world will bring Skynet into being. In fact, the groundwork is being unwittingly laid even now.

That Russians could intefere in the 2016 American election points up the interconnectedness of our world at this time. Only China is making a concerted effort to wall off, or firewall off, everyone else. They are not allowing their citizenry to participate in the globalization of information.

If the Chinese were smart enough, Skynet could begin there. They're not. They're certainly not dumb but AI technology is advancing much faster elsewhere. They just don't have the experience in AI development to keep pace with the West right now.

Neither do the Russians or Indians. Only the Japanese can be considered to be on a somewhar par with western advancements in AI.

To me, the clear leaders are the US and Israel. American universities and private companies are making great and rapid strides towards the singularity. However, ours is an open society and we regard AI to be first a benefit to humanity and second as a military application.

Israel, on the other hand, is a closed military fortress surrounded by enemies who would kill them instantly if they could. Israelis are extremely intelligent but number only about 8.5 million in a world of 7.6 billion that generally regards them in a negative light.

Skynet will originate in Israel.

Thinking to Revelations in the Bible and thinking about this is enough to make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. Things written about in Revelations 2000 years ago were being described by people having visions of things they certainly could not comprehend. If we had a vision of things in a hyper-advanced society of 2000-3000 years from now, how would we describe it? We would describe by things we know and have heard, not by what exists in the future.

Got a great idea for a book in my head now.
