Three things we learned from Gators' open practice

UF coach Dan Mullen opened the Gators’ entire Saturday practice to the media.
Here are three takeaways:
1. None of the Gators are going to outwork receiver Van Jefferson.
The Ole Miss transfer not only seems to be every quarterback’s favorite target, Jefferson is setting the bar for how to practice.
Jefferson’s dirt-covered, sweat-soaked uniform at the end of the day was a sign of a player who gives maximum effort on every snap. Every teammate’s white uniform was pristine by comparison.
The 6-foot-2, 197-pound Jefferson runs every pass pattern with precision and intensity. He battles for every pass thrown his way and usually comes out the winner.
Jefferson’s effort was rewarded Saturday. QBs targeted him more than any other WR.
The Gators’ receiver group is as deep and talented as it has been in years. To begin with, Tyrie Cleveland has looked like a more complete receiver and Ohio State Trevon Grimes’ big-play ability is evident every day. Josh Hammond has been solid.
But Jefferson, 22, has become the leader of the unit and is poised for a big season after leaving behind arguably the best receiving corps in the SEC at Ole Miss.
Jefferson, a redshirt junior who played two seasons for the Rebels, still has yet to receive an eligibility waiver from the SEC. Though it is expected to happen, the Gators will be happy once it is in hand.
2. Feleipe Franks had the best day among the quarterbacks.
Franks made some shaky throws during routes on air, but once the team moved to 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills the redshirt sophomore stood out from Kyle Trask.

Trask, mind you, was wearing a glove on his throwing hand early in practice and did not look comfortable and confident with his passes.
But it does not change the fact Franks looked solid, making a number of pinpoint throws into coverage. Franks also attacked the middle of the field, an area he all but ignored much of last season when he struggled during his eight starts.
Not surprisingly, the strong-armed Franks hit some deep throws, including a pair to Grimes, who has a knack for getting behind the defense. Yet, Franks also held onto the ball too long, rather than look to make the “unspectacular player,” in Dan Mullen lexicon.
And Franks ended 7-on-7 drills with a near pick-six by Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, potentially undermining a pretty good body of work.
Based on Saturday, Franks would have to be considered the front-runner in the race. On Friday, Mullen said he would like to make a decision on a starter sooner than later.
The team scrimmages Monday for the first time. On Tuesday, Mullen will meet with reporters. Perhaps, UF’s first-year coach will have some news.
3. Cornerback depth is a concern.
UF’s receivers made their share of plays on Saturday against a collection of cornerbacks too often catching their breath.
Marco Wilson, CJ Henderson and Gardner-Johnson are a talented trio, but they cannot handle pass coverage duties alone, especially when fresh receivers are cycling in on every snap.
First-freshman Trey Dean III has the tools to be an SEC-caliber cornerback, but no experience. Sophomore Brian Edwards has potential, but much to prove.
Redshirt sophomore C.J. McWilliams did have a nice pass breakup on a pass to Van Jefferson, so perhaps McWilliams will surprise in 2018.
The loss of top recruit Justin Watkins was a big blow to the position. At the same time, on game days Wilson, Henderson and Gardner-Johnson will not be pushed in nearly 100-degree heat quite as hard as on Saturday.
But fatigue, much less injury, could be hard to overcome on a unit with inexperience and paper-thin depth.

I don't worry too much about the CBs, because I think this offense will be on the field a lot more than the previous few years.

Rewatch Scarlett in 2016, coupled with Davis in 2017 and when Perine has competition. I think Perine runs a lot harder when he knows there are wolves scratching at the door and he's not the outright #1.

VJ, Toney, Krull, Cleveland, Grimes, Pierce, Lemons, Davis, Scarlett, Clement -- that's a loaded offense. Even if our QBs don't play well, we should easily be able to scheme around that much talent in the read option or even jet sweep play.

From 247:

First and foremost, the battle at quarterback appears to be going about as expected. Returning starter Feleipe Franks is still holding onto a narrow lead for the job, and as we indicated in our VIP Practice Notes on the Offense on Saturday, it might be tough for Kyle Trask to really push for the job while nursing an injury to his throwing hand.

Though the job has not yet been won, Feleipe Franks remains a pretty strong favorite to take the starting gig coming out of fall camp. Don't be surprised if Dan Mullen names him the starter in the next week or so.

I've never seen a QB so lucky with the injuries to his rivals.

QB starter might be announced Monday after practice or Tuesday. The toughest part for a coach is to instill into a backup that they need to act like a starter and to remember they are only 1 snap from being a starter...and that goes for every position.

DL is different...when recruited they are told to just learn basic skillsets of the defense cause UF will rotate a lot of fresh legs in the game and frosh will see action. They might only get 4 snaps....but that increases with experience and showing they can play SEC football.

Nobody wants to sit on the bench.

There was never a doubt, Trask will never start at this level. There is a reason he didn’t start over King in High School. It’s been Franks since spring guys, and it is what it is.

I bet the hook will be short if Trask or Jones are close to being ready to play.

Again, no matter who the QB is...th first pick will light up the peanut gallery. An interception can be the result of a WR turning the wrong way or getting grabbed by DB (do refs ever call interference anymore unless the DB out and out tackles the WR?) Interceptions can be the result of tipped pass or QB being hit as he releases the ball.

Gator fans can be brutal and most have little knowledge of football. Those spoiled fans drove Spurrier away. We all need to be patient. Mullen will announce QB soon...he was quoted as saying he wants to have starter named "way before game week" for what that is worth.

I’m of the opinion Emory will be starting by Georgia.

We should all hope that whoever this QB turns out to be is successful and plays all season. I never want any Gator to fail whether I like him or not.

Jesus frick, Reel, I know Quarterbacks.

If this isn't for me, my bad, but I have ample evidence of me predicting Quarterback play.

Back in April, I made the comment (perhaps you think it was luck?) about Franks' biggest defeciency and he did it again in last week's last practice. He won't learn, not in one off-season.

quote:

I defended Driskel even after he left Florida, and predicted his success.

Predicting Grier and defending Driskel BEFORE he played a single snap at LA Tech.

quote:

In the end, we've discussed this and very few of people liked Driskel, but we'll see what he does at another school. Wish nothing but the best for him, especially after he came in and finished the ECU game after being absolutely demonized by the fanbase and blamed for the majority of offensive failures.

I defended Driskel so much that DMB called me a troll to our own fanbase. I'm not some random Twitter hater, I really know Quarterbacks. I predicted Grier, predicted Driskel, LDR last year and this year I predicted Franks' problem. It's not luck.

Obviously that I was right in the past doesn't mean I will be right about Franks, but for whatever reason, when it comes to Quarterbacks I'm almost never wrong.

So I'm going to assume this "little knowledge of football" comment isn't about me, but I will say:

The fanbase is partially the reason I don't want Franks to start. An interception, a turnover, anything, whether or not it's his fault will be infinitely more maligned than anything Trask does because we'll say "he has to learn". Sometimes you need a clean hard drive, and I believe we need one.

The least you could do is read my post before you make your terribly unnuanced, poorly thought out arguments.

you may be wrong

All I want you to do is be intellectually honest, so sue me.

This ought to chap Reel's arse.

"Kyle Trask just ran right over Jeremiah Moon."

"When I say ran over, I mean he literally pummeled him. Moon took some crap for it."

Straws, why would you think this would "chap Reels arse"
I have never heard Reel say anything about any of the QBs except to trust the coaches to pick the the best one to start. I am the same way. You tend to think we are Franks supporters but we are not. I am a Gator fan and will support whoever is on the field. You just need to accept that it may be Franks, or it may be Trask or Jones. You seem to be more hung up on who the starter will be. I just hope the coaches pick the right guy to lead us to victory and I believer Reel feels the same.
Go Gators, Go Franks, Go Trask, go Jones, Go Coach Mullen.

Saying Franks stinks and will never be a good QB doesn't mean Straws won't root for him when he's on the field.

I have to admit though, seeing Franks light up UGA or LSU would be fricking hilarious.

Bingo. If he's on the field, I'll wish him the best.

I just don't think he's got the QB minerals.
