Arkansas tried to hire Bear Bryant twice. The first time Arkansas offered him the job, he accepted. As he drove away after accepting the job, he hears that the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor. Bryant immediately joined the Navy, leaving the Arkansas Head Coaching position vacant. The second time Arkansas offered him the job, Bryant required the University make him the athletic director. The University refused. He went back to coaching at Kentucky.

I didn’t know that about Bear. That’s a great story.
