I thought Bielema was a great hire when you realize they weren’t trying to beat peak-Saban Bama, they were trying to be Wisconsin south and win 10 games a year and play a NYD bowl game. He just couldn’t get it done, but not the worst recent hire.

McElwain won the East twice, no way he was the worst recent hire.

Dooley was barely .500 at La Tech, had no functional area in which excelled and was not known as a recruiter. He alienated fans, had players who got in trouble and didn’t win at a top 20 program given plenty of time and no probation. Strong contender.

Sumlin had his program on the cusp of national prominence, had a Heisman winner and beat Saban. No way he was the worst.

Butch Jones won 9 games twice and recruited well. Also won 11 games at CMU and 10 wins at Cinncinati. Far more than Dooley can claim.

Mike Price was a terrible cultural fit, but had back to back 10 win seasons at Washington State of all places. Far worse resumes than his despite his night with destiny in Destin.

I’d go Dooley as worst hire of the post BCS era but let’s just say LSU should avoid casting any stones because they could be topping this list in 2-3 years.

Based on this the SEC all-time worst UT holds the No.1 spot.

I think this speaks to the 'fit' of football hires, especially in the SEC. That style of play isn't going to win at Arkansas. Teams like Arky, Ole Miss, South Carolina, etc. aren't going to line up and win 'smash-mouth' style games against LSU, Bama, and Georgia consistently.

Each of those teams has done really well when they've had coaches that embrace a more open style of offense: Petrino, Freeze, Spurrier. I wouldn't call it gimmicky, so much as using the 'big' teams strengths against them.

I think a guy like Kiffin (if he is focused and held accountable) could be a killer at a second-tier SEC school because he's got a very creative offensive mind. Chip Kelly is another one, thankfully he went back out West.
