That can't be right....

I figured his notoriety came from his sons and they're support for Ole Miss.

Different era back then...the rules were not nearly so pass friendly as they are now...there was no 5-yard cushion...the DBs could whack on the WRs all the way downfield till the ball was in the air...and the QB wasn't protected by the rules as much either. Not to mention, the offenses were much more run oriented back in that day...weren't that many dink and dunk passes and WR screens to bolster completion percentages...most of the passes were 10+ yards downfield...

Same way in the NFL...you'll see a lot of QBs in the Hall of Fame that had more career INTs than TDs, with most having career completion percentages well under 60% and even a few under 50%...

As a kid, I remember watching Manning on TV in the '69 game against Bama...he was the Ole Miss team and he was the best player on the field...

Context. Passing stats in the early 70s in college FB were mostly terrible.

Teams were still running the Veer and shite.
