I think ours is the best.
Mississippi State
Defensive End: Montez Sweat
2017 Stats: 48 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, 11 sacks
Sweat tied for the league lead in sacks last year and you have to think he will improve this year. He was an All-SEC selection last year and a preseason All-American this year.
Nose Tackle: Jeffery Simmons
2017 Stats: 60 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 5 sacks
Like you said, Simmons will have to be double teamed. He was also an All-SEC selection last year and preseason All-American this year.
Defensive Tackle: Cory Thomas
2017 Stats: 12 tackles
Redshirt Senior who has had limited playing time (5 games last year).
Defensive Tackle: Braxton Hoyett
2017 Stats: 21 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks (11 games)
Defensive End: Gerri Green
2017 Stats (At Linebacker): 38 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 5 sacks
Gerri Green has been at linebacker at State, but with Shoop running a 4-2-5 scheme, he has moved to defensive end. The good thing about that is that it is his natural position. He has talent!
Defensive End: Chauncey Rivers
Had to sit out last year because he was academically ineligible, but experts say he is better than Sweat and nearly as good as Simmons.
That's 4 potential draft picks on the defensive line. The depth we have there is stunning.
Linebacker: Leo Lewis
Leo has had so many things going on off the field here at State that it has been a distraction. This year, he can focus on football and I expect him to have his best year yet.
Linebacker: Erroll Thompson
Thompson has a high ceiling with lots of talent. He had a big year at the end of the year last year and we can expect him to continue that this year.
Willie Gay is also extremely talented at Linebacker.
Sweat, Simmons, Green, and Rivers will all be blocked, leaving gaps for Lewis, Thompson, etc. to go through.
