Not sure about the backstory but I'll update as I get it...and it's as simple as tbs rehashing what should've been allowed to rest from Spurrier days.

ETA just to point and laugh at them telling Tim fricking Brando they "know stuff."

Don’t know much about whatever the frick is going on but I agree with Brando’s last statement 100%

Heath Cline was talking about it last night on his show. Brando basically said that SC Fans didn't have any right to be pissed at the way things ended with Spurrier, because Spurrier was a legend who took us to new heights and for that we should forever be grateful.

Well I would certainly disagree with that statement. He deserves blame as much as he deserves credit.

Agreed. He gave us a taste of success, but with complacency left us in a mess. Where his lasting impression will be is the start of facility upgrades. Thankfully, we now have a coach who will work tirelessly to restock and develop the roster, where I believe we'll have longer sustained success on the field while maintaining and continuing along with what we need off the field as well. I certainly don't expect 10+ wins per season, but there should be no reason not to expect a minimum of 8. Yes, Florida and Tennessee will likely rebound at some point in the future, but we are to the point where we should be able to keep up with them as well.

Heath disagreed as well. He highlighted the lackadaisical recruiting effort, the hiring or Whammy, and the hiring of his son as RC as points to show just how it fell apart.

Spurrier did some great things for USC. But he retired about two or so years before he bothered to step down as the Head Coach.
For that matter Holtz did some very positive things at USC but he was well past his prime, especially for his last three seasons.
The good thing about Muschamp is that he is in his coaching prime and not at the end of it. He still has the energy and fire to finish the job. No insult to either Spurrier or Holtz, but at a certain point in time you just don't have the pop on your fastball that you used to.

Spurrier should have stepped down at the end of 2013.

quitting mid season pissed me off.
Then they left us with that toolbag Elliot.
Glad he didn't get hired as the HC

I think he wanted to but was talked out of it by Jeri and Ray Tanner.

I am not sure how close we were to this happening, but I was a little nervous about it for a minute.

We would not have been in position for the fall if he didn't take us there. He didn't do it...his staff did. The buck stops with Spurrier but if you think Spurrier knew what was going to happen and was OK with it...then you are an idiot !

I agree with your assessment. Sometimes people hang on because they don't know what else to do. Spurrier and Holtz put us on the national stage when we were not even a player. We have their successes to ride for many years to come. Those years of success created a bonanza with facilities. The down year or two won't take the facilities down....Muschamp can capitalize on what they left for him to present in the future.

Can't agree with this. He did it by hiring and staying with an incompetent staff. He was the boss, CEO, etc.. whatever tag you want to put on him. He was the face of the company and through his complacency in every facet of the organization, the "fall" happened. So yes, while he did put us in position for the fall to happen in the first place, it was his fault, not his staff's.

I guess I'll play devil's advocate here.
Yeah, Spurrier's cruise to the finish screwed us in his last 2 years with particular emphasis on his 2-3 years comment that caused damn near every recruit worth a shite to jump ship, but with that said everyone keeps talking about "the fall" and "the decline" without asking themselves the fall and decline from what? From a high this program hasn't seen in 120 years of football by damn near every measure. Total wins, wins in a season, wins vs ranked opponents, wins at home, opponents beat, etc.
And yes, it would have been nice for Spurrier to have left on a better not, but let's not forget it was he and Hyman that finally coerced the boosters into finally putting their money where their mouths were which helped set up the facilities that have helped build this program long after Spurrier has departed.
Again, that's not an excuse for how Spurrier went out, but I think people say, "Yeah, yeah, we did stuff we never did before, but..." without really understanding what that means.
Hell, think of something as simple as this. Any QB pre-Spurrier that had wins over UGA, UF, UT, and Clemson would have been immortalized in Gamecock football forever. Under Spurrier, what did we have? 2 or 3 that did that? And yes, I understand that is aided by some down years of those teams, with particular emphasis on UT, but I think people gloss over just where we were for 120 years pre-Spurrier.

ETA: I don’t disagree with your post, but I will say Spurrier doomed himself with the 2-3 years left comment. Any chance of recruiting well went out the window with that and he should have retired after the 2014 season, if not earlier. All of that said, I’m very thankful for what he did and don’t hold any real ill will towards him at this point.

FWIW, I didn’t downvote that post.
But I’d take all those wins over our ‘Big 4’ opponents again if it meant 4 more losses to UK.
