What leverage do you think he had exactly? You think losing a salary year + risking a #1 overall slot over a 7-10% bonus hike is leverage?
You can't do better than #1 overall but you can do a hell of a lot worse.

While true, Detroit could lose the rights to the #1 overall pick if he had come back. Seniors have zero leverage. Juniors have another option than signing on the dotted line.
