I don’t follow recruiting at all really, but I was talking football with my gator buddy and I asked him how Mullen is doing so far and he says recruiting has been concerning (he called it a shite show, fwiw)

It’s only June and it’s early

Just wondering if other gator fans feel same wa

I went over to the 247 gator board and it looks like there is indeed some concern trolling

It is amazing to me someone can already bitch about a coach before he even coaches one second on field

My guess is that the concern is based on the fact that McElwain struggled too so they're already behind their peers and are getting antsy.

Their recruiting thread on the Florida board here is pretty rosy. Mostly Straws convincing the others that all is well.

It won't be if we miss on Steele and/or Pittman. We need to get those two because we put a lot of effort into it.

That being said: It's June. Florida fans are retarded. Their primary concern is that we don't have the commitments already lined up but we haven't even had Friday Night Lights.

Not even remotely concerned, if this carries into the season that's when I'll start to worry.

Our recruiting has been horrible for 4+ years, it’s not just Mullen. We need talent and we need it yesterday. Mullen fired the guy who had 2 top 5 classes lined up for Mac before he was fired, just to hire his buddy Greg Knox, who hasn’t landed one recruit that I can recall. This program needs blue chip talent more than anything else and we aren’t landing any, I don’t know what else Gator fans can be but frustrated, we hate losing more than we like winning, and we’ve been getting our arse kicked in all the games that matter since 2009. We want that shite to stop. Mullen’s going to be coaching in an oven until he wins an SEC title or gets fired. He knew what he was getting into though, Gator fans are spoiled and he pretends to be okay with that, we will see if he delivers on the rhetoric, I lean towards not a chance but we’ll see.

The Mullen/Hevesy recruiting machine is a disease. I'm just glad we got the antidote. It's not like the players that he signs are bad, it's all the other ones he misses on.

Spoiled and reactionary. There is literally no reason for us to be upset in June/July. We still have Friday Night Lights and an entire season ahead of us. The landscape changes drastically with wins and I don't think there's much else Mullen can do. The lazy recruiter trope certainly has been dispelled by just the sheer volume of recruits actually swinging by to visit.

That being said, these threads aren't looking for anything else other than "Gators suck lulz", so I wish everyone good luck.

I don’t agree with any of this, but your optimism is applauded. I hope you’re right and I’m wrong.

Gators are lost.

They hired a good coach to take over when they demand/need/despair for greatness.

This will get messy.

It has nothing to do with optimism, and that's what people get hung up on with these threads. I'm neutral. I will worry when X happens is not "I will not worry".

The problem is that this is entirely too early and there are literally tons of examples out there.

Ole Miss was #1 one month, classes can't really be examined until we're counting LOIs. Until then we're just twiddling our thumbs hoping football season comes.

"Team x, y and z were ranked at _____ and ended at ______", if your answer to this is: "Yeah but we're ranked ______" it's not that you're being negative and I'm being positive, it's that you're making an affirmation to an unknowable end and I'm simply waiting until that end.

A complete shitshow. Mullen is recruiting just like Mac did. Spare me it's June BS. His staff NEEDS TO KILL IT @ FNL. If the bbq is any indication I'm not getting my hopes up for any elite guys committing. Great recruiters can sell in all four seasons. Let this graph tell you how bad things are:
August 1 will be a big date:

This is where we're at now

LINK

quote:

If we look at recruiting through August 1 for Jim McElwain, Will Muschamp and Urban Meyer’s second and third recruiting classes, a clear trend emerges. The percentage of top-300 players compared to total recruits is remarkably similar prior to August 1 and after National Signing Day is over.

The implication here is critical. Were Mullen to not pick up any more commitments before August 1 (or pick up another 3-star or two), he would have a profile that looks just like Jim McElwain’s 2016 recruiting class.

That class was ranked 12th nationally, with 7 top-300 players and zero 5-stars. Compare that to Zook, Muschamp and Meyer who had 15, 18 and 11 top-300 players in their second classes ranked 1st, 2nd and 3rd nationally.

My recollection was that McElwain filled out the 2016 class late with 3-star candidates but the numbers above show that I was wrong. He was filling the class with 3-star players right from the jump, which is very similar to where Mullen stands now.

What this should do is point out the flaw in the “Mullen has to show it on the field and the recruits will come” crowd.

Florida went 9-3 in 2005 in Urban Meyer’s first year, and the percentage of elite players after August actually went down. Admittedly Meyer only had three commits by August, but those players were all elite.

Will Muschamp was able to sell the program before he ever coached a game, reeling in 12 commitments, 8 of whom were elite by August. The Gators then struggled to a 7-6 record in Muschamp’s first season, but were able to bring in the exact same percentage of elite players during/after the season as before.

Jim McElwain struggled early, with only four of his 12 commits qualifying as elite prior to the 2015 season. You could actually make an argument that McElwain had the most on-field success in his first year (10-4, SEC Championship Game). What you can’t argue is that McElwain struggled after August as well to bring in elite recruits, as only 7 of his 25 commits in the 2016 class were ranked in the top-300.

This doesn’t just hold for the Gators. Kirby Smart’s bump class in 2017 had 10 commits by August 1, 7 of them top-300 players (70%). The Bulldogs finished the 2017 class with 17 top-300 players out of 26 commits (65%). It didn’t matter that Georgia struggled to an 8-5 record – two games worse than under Mark Richt the year prior – when it came to recruiting.

But perhaps you’d argue that it’s unfair to compare Mullen to Smart, who has proven to be an elite recruiter. Well, what about Penn State’s James Franklin? Franklin came from a school (Vanderbilt) with little football tradition and went 24-15 and finished ranked his last two seasons.

Franklin’s bump class at Penn State ranked 14th nationally with 8 of 15 commits prior to August ranking in the top-300. It is true that Penn State struggled in 2014 (7-6) and that the percentage of top-300 recruits decreased to 44 percent in the final class. But that number increases to 52 percent if you widen the definition of elite and include two recruits who ranked 306th and 316th.

The take-home is striking: by August 1 it is clear whether a coach is going to bring home a good overall recruiting class or not

That is simply reinforcing what we already lnow about him, sitting on his arse waiting for recruits to "swing by" is exactly what was meant when he was described as a lazy recruiter, he just does not like it and is not very good at it.

If he wins at FL and it becomes a talent magnet once again he will look like a great recruiter, but if you are depending on him to go out and convince the top kids with other good options to come you are going to be very disapointed.

Mullens a good coach. In time, as the program improves, so will recruiting. But it's looking rough right now, especially with Taggart, Richt, and Kirby killing it in recruiting.

He doesn’t have time, our roster sucks now and needs to be upgraded, he’s not doing it.

That was really awesome and informative.

Sucks to suck :-(

I would point out, and I said it elsewhere - his first class was pretty good though, all things being equal. 12 of 19 in the top 300 plus that top Juco TE they just picked up this summer for 2018 and then Jefferson and Grimes were both top 300 players and they get to play right away at Florida.

Things could be worse.

We hope, this is in no way, shape, or form, guaranteed. I would wait to hear it from the NCAA.

Steele will end up at USC. Your chances are better with Pittman, but you have to watch out for Oregon. Good luck.
