What major war have they won? Let's run through all the major wars and who won them:
Revolution: Army
1812: Army
Mexican: Army
Civil: Army
Indian: Army
Spanish: Army
WW1: Army:
WW2: Army
No, atom bombs dropped by Army planes did.
Do we really? That's the same justification the Navy uses for the SEALS...the truth is that the Army can and always has done that job when it really mattered.
Let's look at the list of some of the biggest Amphibious Assaults in American History:
D-Day: Army
Inchon: Mixed, commanded by Army General
Phillipines: Army
Torch: army
Okinawa: Mixed, commanded by Army General
Up until WW1 the Marines Core was almost comletely MIA but they always claim "muh history" which is all a big fat PHONEY LIE.
"From the halls of Montezuma": refers to the Battle of Chapultepec in the Mexican American War in which Soldiers outnumbered Marines 7200 vs 400.
"To the shores of Tripoli": refers to the expedition against the Barbary pirates because the Army was too busy beating the British.
The Marines Core should rename themselves the Mareme Corre because that is what they are, a meme, and the rise of their meme can be directly tied to a decline in US Military performance in major conflicts:
Challenge to the reader: Name a famous Marines Core General off the top of your head. Now name a famous Army General.
Marines: You probably can't name one, maybe Mattis but he's only famous for what he did after the Core and because he's currently SecDef, he won't be remembered long term.
Army: Washington, Grant, Sherman, Pershing, Patton, Eisenhower, Bradley, the list goes on and on and on.
Army>Marines and the Army could do their job easy, it is huge government waste to duplicate the capabilities. The Marines only exist in their current form because the Navy started having a big political piss contest with the Army in the late 1800s so they invented and really started pushing the meme...the same reason they invented the SEALs.
They aren't even a self-sufficient force and depend on the Navy and Army for everything and not just Logistics....Artillery and Armor support too. They spend so much money on pretty uniforms and TV ads that they can't afford modern-day equipment and have to use Army hand-me-downs.
Don't @ me, I already know the only response is gonna be that picture of the fat Soldier in that Iraqi DFAC.

The United States doesn't need a Marine corps, they want it though.
Since Nov 10th 1775, the United States Marine Corps has been kicking arse all over the world. We are America's 911 force.

Had this taped on the door of my recruiting office.
This is an actual recruiting poster for the army.
The only two branches Army and Us. I was the only guy in my office. While I worked 100+ hrs a week while the army recruiters got off at 5 (for high suicide rates in USAREC). We met our goals and dominated Market Share for our areas. The army hasn't made recruiting goals in years. They are weak just like most of the cat 4 soldiers that make up the Army. If you wanted to be the best you would've walked into the Marine Corps office rather than staring at it wondering if you could make it.

I don't know a whole lot about it since the farthest into the desert I got was shooting craps in Dubai but just the fear factor is enough to make some Saudi's nervous, I'd bet.
Those dude's probably see 20 army men a day and then all the sudden you got a marine squad on you. The Marines are a different animal when you're learning to kill people.
The terrorists over there know what a truck mechanic is the same as they know what a Navy Seal is.

Yep. One of my buddies got raided on bastion in Afg. A HMLA unit took down the insurgants. Buddy was walking back from chow when it was kicking off.
I remember when I was in AQ Iraq. Nothing there and snowflake warnings all the time about possible raids. Wild west by Syria.

They are what they are.
A specialized force that, as of right now, happens to be just what we need. Mixed infantry that is capable of being deployed rapidly to trouble spots around the world.
Marine Corp General... well you got to go with Chesty Puller. Personally, for famous Army General, I'd go with Dwight Eisenhower.
Are they better then the Army? Well any Marine will say they are. They had a bad habit of being beaten like a drum in war games against the heavy Armored divisions that used to be the gauntlet of American military might. Then again the Iraqis did a lot worse against the armored divisions and the Marines did cover themselves in glory during the first Gulf War.
They do, however, combine ASL (Air, Sea, Land) to a great degree since all of those elements are tied into the Marines.
The Marines are a semi-elite combat force. On par with the US Army Rangers and Airborne divisions. Below Special Forces.
If you really want to ruffle some feathers below the SAS, SBS, Foreign Legion, and Special Operations Command of Australia.
That still puts them is some fairly darn good company.

The correct answer:
The 82nd hasn't done a combat jump since WW2. They're just as motarded as the Marine Corps, if not worse.

I give OP credit for this thread. It should be an interesting one.
I don't have any type of thinking that I'm better than anyone. I know what I chose though because of what it's known for.

I know what I chose too because I was stupid and didn't go Air Force or Navy.

The truth is that probably somewhere around 90% of the entire Military is made up of socially awkward people who either:
1. Couldn’t get into college or didn’t know what to do after high school so they just joined up.
2. Were socially awkward losers in high school and wanted the hero worship associated with being in the military in today’s society.
Or both.

All the combat vets got out due to unnecessary bullshite. Same with the Army.

From Wiki:

In 1989 during the U.S invasion of Panama the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division made its first combat jump in over 40 years. The 1st Brigade of the 82nd secured Omar Torrijos International Airport in Tocumen, Panama.

I used to have my poolies sabotage the army recruiters when they visited the high schools.
"Hey boss, what school you going to today?" "Oh, right on bro. Good luck". Then send out an all hands text to kids at the school and wait for the recon to come back. It was fun hearing him bitch about it when he got back and didn't get any leads in a priority high school.
