While I agree the prep is different between the starter and the back up, you don't announce a red shirt. He would be prepping as the back up so he is ready to come in when needed. Just like any other back up. The difference is, if he isn't needed to come in all year, then when the season is over, he gets another season of eligibility.

How do you know he knew he wasn't red shirting before Eason got injured? This whole statement is a guess and carries no weight.

Insiders said Fromm was playing game 1. If they knew, Fromm knew. Fields is gonna play for the same reasons Fromm was going to and tua did. While a redshirt makes sense on a level, It’s ultimately best for the team to have a backup ready to go as best prepped as possible. Saban and smart both understood that last year.
