There is a different mentality when you are prepping to play vs redshirting. The number of practice reps one receives are also different. The pressure of performing in practice is also different from a real game.
Fromm and tua were both better prepared because they knew they weren’t redshirting. Tua was better prepared for his moment because of his PT, which wasn’t meaningless to him or saban. Same will apply to fields. Kirby isn’t gonna quit learning from saban just because he left saban.

While I agree the prep is different between the starter and the back up, you don't announce a red shirt. He would be prepping as the back up so he is ready to come in when needed. Just like any other back up. The difference is, if he isn't needed to come in all year, then when the season is over, he gets another season of eligibility.

How do you know he knew he wasn't red shirting before Eason got injured? This whole statement is a guess and carries no weight.
