Saban played Tua all year to prepare him for a situation where he may be needed.
There was a situation where he was needed in the 2nd half of the championship game.

It has nothing to do with Fromm being the starter. It has everything to do with getting the 2nd stringer out on the field and ready so that he can be a weapon (not a liability) if we need him in a big game.

You are thinking too much. If Fields is the 2nd best, then get him ready to play now. You can redshirt him the 2nd year if you are so desperate for the class separation. That way, Fields already is prepped. He already has game film to focus his reps on improvement. And he can still go a season on standby if needed.

With scholarship limits, having a bunch of 5th year players is counterproductive to signing great recruiting classes. If the red shirt isnt necessary, I pwrsonally wouldn't use it.
