Well there is more to this story than just that.
Stans gambling on Sidney is what did him in.
He also resigned and was not fired. In truth after that fiasco he was ready to go.
Hiring Rick Ray is what it is. He inherited a dumpster fire, an impossible situation. So it really did not matter at the time. He was/is not necessarily a bad coach but he was in way over his head at the time. Basically any other coach would have suffered the same fate as Rick Ray.
Our program was set back years (5-6 years) and is just now returning to its stature in the conference.

I'm surprised no MSU fan has mentioned Sly Croom. You must have accepted USA Today's assessment back in 2004 that he was a "groundbreaking hire", and forgiven his shortcomings.
