Um, you would be doing the right thing by pushing him to the NBA. The guaranteed money for the last pick in the first round for a 3 year contract is more than the expected lifetime earnings of someone who holds a masters degree and about equal to a Phd. Only MDs, JDs, and Engineers usually make more, and again that is over a lifetime.

The wrong thing is what I'm doing which is selfishly hoping he comes back for my own fan interest.

Athletes have taken out insurance policies in the past to protect their value against injuries. I wonder if that's possible for Colin?
