Because MLB didn't have a draft until '65. Every team invited hundreds of prospects to camps every year, all over the country.
Namath is definitely an icon

Yea, I'm not old enough but I know enough old farts in my family and read enough to know that Joe Namath pre-legs falling apart was a different animal than Joe Namath post-leg issues.
Basically anyone who watched him when he still had knees said he was as good as anybody they'd ever seen and was a better athlete than anyone they'd ever seen at QB.
