Alabama’s RB plans in 2019 include getting former 5-star commit back on board

Trey Sanders is one of Alabama's top RB targets.

Alabama wrapped up its 2018 recruiting class with 19 signees, which was the seventh-ranked class in the country and second-best in the SEC, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Full attention now turns to the 2019 class. Over the course of the next two weeks, SEC Country will look at each position group on offense and defense for the Class of 2019. Here is a look at running backs.

2018 depth chart: Damien Harris (SR), Najee Harris (SO), Josh Jacobs (JR), Brian Robinson (SO), Jerome Ford (FR)

Departures after 2018 season: D. Harris

How many commits at position: 0

How many Bama plans to take: 2

Main targets: 5-star prospects Trey Sanders and Quavaris Crouch, 4-star prospects Tyrion Davis, John Emery Jr.

Importance of additions (1-10): 4

The breakdown: Alabama signed one running back in the 2018 class: 4-star prospect Jerome Ford. The Crimson Tide will lose Damien Harris after this season. Harris coming back to school after his junior season was a big surprise after he racked up back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons.

When the 2019 running back(s) get to campus, Josh Jacobs will be a senior, Najee Harris and Brian Robinson will be juniors and Ford likely will be a redshirt freshman. That’s why I expect Alabama to sign two at the position.

Trey Sanders, arguably the team’s top target at the position, committed to Alabama as a sophomore and de-committed from the Crimson Tide last month. Sanders told SEC Country in January that Alabama is still his leader.

“I only get this chance one time to get recruited in high school,” Sanders said. “It’s a onetime thing. I’m going to take my time and enjoy the process. I was thinking about it for a while and me and my family got together to talk about it. We decided that it would be best for me to open my recruitment back up.”

So, Sanders de-committed from Alabama because he wants to enjoy his recruitment as an uncommitted player. It’s not common for a player to recommit to a school, so we’ll see what happens with Sanders during the next few months. He has visited Tuscaloosa several times.

Quavaris Crouch is built like an Alabama running back and linebacker. He’s 6-foot-2 and weighs more than 220 pounds. Crouch rushed for 3,246 yards 33 touchdowns during his junior season to go with 51 tackles and 14 sacks on defense. He’s a giant priority for the Tide on both sides of the ball and he’s already visited Tuscaloosa.

Tyrion Davis recently told SEC Country that Alabama is his No. 2 school. Could an underwhelming season at LSU be enough to change his mind? He’s a former teammate of sophomore linebacker Chris Allen, but current teammate Kardell Thomas, a 5-star guard, is committed to LSU and locked in with the Tigers. Thomas and Davis are very close and have expressed their desire to play together at the next level. Davis has said that competition doesn’t scare him one bit and said he wouldn’t have minded being committed to Alabama with Sanders there.

John Emery received an offer from Alabama earlier this month. Not much is known about his interest in Alabama, but he’s a major target for LSU, too.

Other targets who claim Alabama offers are 4-star prospects Khafre Brown, Nay'Quan Wright, Deondrick Glass, and 3-star prospects Mike Hollins and Joachim Bangda.

Note: 4* RB/LB Steele Chambers is also a target.

ETA: 4* RB Jerrion Ealy got a Bama offer today.
