Wish we could get Nix with Pickens at BCW. Pretty sure the elite 11 conflicted with BCW last year also and Fields couldn’t make it. Why don’t we move the BCW to another weekend?

Edit: maybe I should clarify the question. Wouldn’t it be smarter to move the date to where it doesn’t conflict with the elite 11 finals?

Now that we got all that outta the way. Here's some crootin news

Top defensive end target Curtis Fann has long-established relationship with Auburn coaches (SECCountry)
quote:

Top Georgia DE target details relationship with Auburn DC

When South Carolina kicked off Curtis Fann’s recruitment a year ago, it didn’t take long for Auburn to follow suit.

Almost a year ago to the day — May 16, 2017, to be exact — the 4-star defensive lineman received his first college offer from South Carolina. The Gamecocks have been a perceived favorite since that point, especially since Fann’s 2-hour proximity from Columbia, S.C., makes regular visits easy. But 24 hours after that South Carolina offer, another meaningful SEC offer came his way from Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele.

The relationship between those two has blossomed ever since. It makes the Tigers a contender in this recruitment.

“Remember how I said South Carolina was my first offer? Coach Steele, after I got that one, he contacted me like the next day. They offered me the very next day,” Fann told SEC Country. “Auburn was the third offer. Ever since then, Coach Steele, me and him, we’ve just had a real, real strong relationship. That’s been for like a year now. That relationship is real strong.”

In all, Fann has visited Auburn three times — once this spring for a junior day. It’s not as easy for him to visit the Plains as it is South Carolina, but he plans on changing that soon. Fann wanted to make it for Big Cat Weekend, but he scheduled a Louisville official visit from May 30-June 2 which will likely conflict with that.

He plans to be back at Auburn shortly after that, however. Fann hasn’t visited Auburn as regularly as he has South Carolina, but he said that shouldn’t be seen as an indication of his interest in the Tigers compared to the Gamecocks. It’s just a more convenient trip to Columbia, S.C.

That may be one factor working slightly against Auburn, but there’s another one working strongly in the Tigers favor — defensive line coach Rodney Garner

“In my opinion, they’ve got one of the best defensive line coaches in the country. So I feel like, if I went there, I know for a fact I’d be developed as a defensive linemen,” Fann said. “We talk a lot. When I went up there last summer, we spent the whole day together. Then he came to my school last week. He couldn’t talk to me, but he talked to my coaches. I talk to him a lot. He’s real cool.”

At camps, the 6-foot-2 standout from Stillmore, Ga., tries his hand at defensive tackle and defensive end. Many college coaching staffs want to bring him in as a hybrid who could play both. Others even want him to step out of his comfort zone as a stand-up edge rusher.

Steele and Garner have told Fann they want him as a hand-in-the-dirt defensive end, similar to Marlon Davidson’s role in the defense.

“You know, they’re losing five defensive linemen. He wants me to come in and be the next All-American that they have,” Fann said.

Fann also has a connection to a few Auburn commits. He perked up at the question about some recent recruiting buzz for the Tigers with guys such as Owen Pappoe and Jaylin Simpson — two good friends of Fann — committing recently. Fann made it clear his decision is his own decision and was, more or less, unchanged by their announcements.

Still, it strengthens his desire to visit.

“I wouldn’t say it really affected me. I’m happy for them, but this is my decision, so I don’t really let that affect me, but …” Fann said, pausing for a few seconds. “I do need to get down there again because those are my homies.”

Other schools to watch out for with Curtis Fann

Curtis Fann wants to make one point about his recruitment publicly known.

“No, I ain’t got a leader,” he said.

South Carolina, for reasons laid out above, had been perceived to hold that title. That type of talk has never come directly from Fann, however. He doesn’t downplay his interest in South Carolina. He’s open about his appreciation for them on Twitter, and as listed above, visits often.

But for the time being, Fann considers programs such as South Carolina, Auburn, Florida State, Louisville, Notre Dame and LSU on a level playing field. Fann said Florida State and South Carolina are recruiting him harder than anyone else at this stage of his recruitment. He’ll take an official visit to Louisville in two weeks.

Here’s what Fann has to say about those schools specifically:

South Carolina: They offered me first. Our relationship has always been good. It’s 2 hours away from house, not far at all. That’s why I go so much. They offered me last year. It’s Coach [Will] Muschamp and [offensive coordinator] Coach [ Bryan] McClendon. They need me. They want me. Coach Muschamp says he’s not going to take no for an answer.

Florida State: I talk with almost all the coaches, but I’d say I talk with [defensive ends] Coach [Mark] Snyder and [defensive tackles] Coach [Odell] Haggins the most. I just feel at home when I got there. All the coaches just make me feel comfortable, and I can talk to them about whatever.

Louisville: “It’s my first official visit. I’m looking forward to a lot of things. Going far off like that, I want to see how that feels. Their defensive coordinator (Brian VanGorder) is really experienced. I look at his track record, and I can tell how he’s building everything. I want to go up there and learn more about that. I know I’ll like it, but I want to go up and see how it feels.”

When Fann visits these schools — and Auburn — he has specific criteria in mind.

“I want to know they’re going to develop me right for the next level because that’s my ultimate goal. I don’t want to be around someone I feel like I can’t trust or talk to about everything. I need like a family away from home — and somewhere I know I can be successful at,” Fann said.

Fann hasn’t set a specific commitment date, and he’s not sure if he will. He admits his mind can change quickly, so he doesn’t want to set something up and then have second guesses. Fann also said he’s not trying to de-commit throughout the process, so he’ll wait until he’s ready.

Fann did say, however, that when he “gets that feeling,” he’ll know.

Had no idea VanGorder was at Louisville now

Auburn hosts 2 visitors ranked inside top 100

Auburn’s heater on the recruiting trail isn’t lost on other highly rated recruits.

The Tigers hosted top players ranked inside the top 100 over the weekend.

Georgia linebacker commit Trezmen Marshall made his first known visit to Auburn. That’s a large development. Marshall committed to the Bulldogs the Friday before Pappoe chose the Tigers.

I bring that up because Marshall and Pappoe have a relationship worth noting.

Until Pappoe’s commitment, there wasn’t any communication between Marshall and Auburn. The nation’s No. 98 overall prospect made a gentleman’s agreement with Pappoe that the two would officially visit each other’s school before signing. That greatly assists Auburn since Pappoe was already likely to officially visit Georgia and Marshall had little to no contact with Auburn.

This shouldn’t be considered a groundbreaking moment in Marshall’s recruitment, though. He’s firmly committed to Georgia — just as Pappoe is to Auburn — but the initial visit signals a chance for the Tigers that wasn’t there prior to Pappoe’s commitment.

The other visitor, a regular: 5-star lineman Clay Webb.

Webb has been to Auburn twice this spring, but countless times over the years. I continue to believe the Tigers have as much as a chance as Alabama to land him, but this one will go into the fall. Georgia also can’t be ignored here. His relationship with Bulldogs offensive line coach Sam Pittman is too strong to dismiss despite the in-state pull.

Which top 2019 prospects are trending toward Auburn? (SECCountry)
quote:

Simple question, but great question.

I particularly like it because of the way it can be interpreted. Some people see trending as: “This person is likely going to Auburn.” It also can be seen as: “This person is showing much more interest in Auburn than before.” Or another form of trending can be: “This person is much more linked to Auburn than many are saying.”

Rather than determine which one you want specifically, I’ll give you a taste of all three. Here are three prospects who are “trending” to the Tigers — for all three categories.

This person has a high chance of going to Auburn…

This is always the hardest one to nail down, mainly because it’s the one that can make me look the most wrong.

Here are the three I feel comfortable placing in this category:

4-star athlete Jashawn Sheffield
4-star offensive lineman Keiondre Jones
3-star defensive end Colby Wooden

Sheffield’s interest has been well-documented. It’s actually a bit of a surprise he hasn’t made his decision already. Sheffield’s close friend and teammate, Jaylin Simpson, is already in the class. Sheffield has been to Auburn twice this spring and has left calling the Tigers his leader both times. Whenever he makes a return trip, I expect Sheffield to finalize his Auburn interest.

Jones lives so close, he can visit Auburn whenever he pleases. That has added up to a handful of visits just this spring alone. He has been to Auburn more than any other college. Even with his family connection to Florida quarterback Emory Jones, I still think the Tigers are the team to beat.

Wooden fits in this category or the third category. But the Tigers have made a strong push for the Archer (Ga.) defensive end. He has visited a few times since the end of last football season, and his teammate bond with cornerback Andrew Booth should help, as well.

This person shows more Auburn interest than before…

Sometimes a landmark event can change how recruits think about a school. Five-star linebacker Owen Pappoe’s pledge might’ve had that effect on some, or the interest might be for a different reason altogether.

Either way, here are three prospects showing newfound interest in Auburn:

4-star athlete Trezmen Marshall
5-star cornerback Andrew Booth
4-star wide receiver Jalen Curry

Marshall visited Auburn over the weekend. That’s something that hadn’t happened before and likely wouldn’t have happened without the addition of Pappoe. It’s still too early to assess whether Marshall’s visit will materialize into anything more. There’s no doubt, however, that he’s more interested in Auburn than he was a month ago.

Booth is another prospect close to Pappoe who has been to Auburn since the 5-star linebacker’s commitment. The Tigers are serious contenders for Booth, who brought his family on the last trip. He’s likely to become an Auburn vs. Clemson vs. Georgia battle. Only a few weeks ago, Auburn felt like it was on the outside looking in.

Curry still hasn’t been to Auburn this spring, but the Tigers are hoping that changes soon. Curry told SEC Country he wants to make it to the Plains in June. He has been in communication with Pappoe, too, so that should help.

Curry is a name I have always seen linked to AU but until visits hard to think anything's real. I know AU were his first offer & he has always said he likes AU a bunch because of that

This person likes Auburn more than many gurus suggest…

Often, Auburn can be left out of the conversation when national reporters are talking about the schools a prospect in strongly interested in. That’s how it was with Pappoe for a long time, and we saw how that turned out.

Here are three prospects who are more interested in Auburn than many suggest:

4-star defensive end Curtis Fann
4-star running back Noah Cain
4-star cornerback Tyrique Stevenson

I wrote in detail about Fann on Sunday. It’s been so engrained in people’s minds that Fann would end up at South Carolina that several schools — not just Auburn — are ignored as it pertains to Fann. The Tigers shouldn’t be. He hopes to visit Auburn in early June.

Cain has visited Auburn once with his father this year. His mother made a separate, solo trip to check out the Plains. Cain told SEC Country on Monday that he’ll be back for Big Cat Weekend on June 2. Texas, LSU, Ohio State and others have been linked to Cain much more than Auburn. That’s misguided. The Tigers are much more in this than many realize.

Stevenson has visited Auburn multiple times this spring. His relationship with cornerbacks coach Marcus Woodson makes the Tigers a threat. It’s never easy to pull elite prospects out of Florida, but Auburn is in much better position to do so than has been made publicly clear.

FWIW I think Stevenson lands at UGA & we get Booth

Auburn’s No. 1 running back target will visit for Big Cat Weekend (SECCountry)
quote:

Top running back will visit for Big Cat Weekend

For the third time this spring, the Cains will visit Auburn.

Noah Cain, the Tigers’ top running back target for 2019, told SEC Country on Monday that he’ll be back at Auburn for Big Cat Weekend on June 2. He’ll make that return trip with his father, who accompanied him for a junior day earlier in the spring. Separately, Cain’s mother visited Auburn on her own to form an opinion about the school.

Multiple sources have confirmed to me that Cain is option 1A or 1B at running back in the 2019 class along with Louisiana prospect John Emery. While Auburn hasn’t always been linked to Cain, it’s obvious there is serious interest between the two sides.

Looking back at Cain’s last visit to Auburn, it’s actually quite interesting to see some of his post-visit comments.

“They surpassed expectations,” Cain said. “All the running backs they put in the league is big for me. Actually they’re the best school at putting running backs in the league; 38 running backs is the most out of any school in FBS. They embraced me this weekend and showed a lot of love.”

Perhaps even more intriguing was not the fact that he talked about his relationship with quarterback Bo Nix — rather how he spoke about it.

Cain spoke highly of his relationship with Nix. He admitted that the Auburn quarterback commit was coming at him hard, and it was working. But he also used the word we on a few occasions in reference to the strong class the Tigers were building.

“Bo Nix is the best dual-threat quarterback in the country, in my opinion. George [Pickens] is a big-time receiver,” Cain said. “Just seeing the future of us possibly playing together at Auburn, that’s big. Like Coach [Gus] Malzahn said, if everything goes in their favor, we could be the top recruiting class in the country.”

Read into that as much as you’d like.

The point being: Auburn is a real threat, even if some national stories don’t necessarily indicate that yet.

Reacting to recent George Pickens comments

In an interview with John Garcia of 247Sports, Auburn wide receiver commit George Pickens has some concerning comments (if you’re an Auburn fan) about the state of his recruitment.

“It’s really open,” Pickens told Garcia. “Because there’s a lot of new schools coming in. I’m trying to see as many schools as I can right now.”

That’s not what Auburn or its fans want to hear. These Pickens comments come not long after he picked up an Alabama offer, which likely will raise even more concern.

This all comes less than a week after one of my notebooks mentioned a shift in the Pickens recruitment. Auburn had a long conversation with Pickens and his mother about limiting (or in a perfect world, completely shutting down) visits to other schools. According to one source, Pickens — and especially his mother — responded positively to the idea.

These comments would suggest otherwise, at least from Pickens’ end.

Still, I’d consider this to be a wait-and-see type of thing. He wants to take official visits to Michigan and Oregon. Those trips likely won’t worry Auburn much given the distance-from-home factor. The Tigers will view those similarly to 2018 defensive tackle Coynis Miller taking late official visits to schools Auburn never really expected would be a threat.

I expect a similar situation to take place with Pickens. Want to take a trip to Oregon or Michigan or somewhere else way far away? That’s fine. Multiple return trips to Tuscaloosa and Athens? That’s not going to fly as much with Malzahn.

Will also say that while Garcia covers the southeast for 247 he's a bammer. Started off as Scout's Bama recruiting guy & moved up to covering the southeast, mostly Alabama for 247. Not saying that what he's reporting is wrong but seems like Pickens likes to tell reporters of their schools what they wanna hear. If he starts missing visits to AU for Bama then I will be concern

FWIW KN reiterated in comments of Garcia story that AU feels very confident Pickens will stick. Also Pickens is expected at BCW

4-star DL hopes to get 'reassurance' from next Auburn visit (Rivals)
quote:

Four-star defensive end Jaren Handy visited Auburn in March and left “very impressed.”

Handy wants to confirm those feelings. He wants to be sure of his interest in Auburn, and he’ll get the chance when he returns June 2.

“I’ll be there and I want to see if I get the same feeling as the first time I visited,” Handy said. “It was a real good feeling and I want to get reassurance of it.”

Handy, who is from Perry Central in New Augusta, Miss., will be one of many elite recruits in Auburn on June 2, which is the day of the Tigers’ annual “Big Cat” event.

Handy won’t make the trip to Auburn alone. His friend and fellow four-star defensive line recruit, Charles Moore, also is expected to attend.

“I talked to Charles and he will be there, too,” Handy said. “We’re both excited to get back to Auburn.”

Handy has developed strong relationships with Auburn defensive line coach Rodney Garner and area recruiter/defensive backs coach Marcus Woodson. Handy hopes to strengthen those bonds during the visit.

“I talk to Coach Woodson a lot,’ Handy said. “I actually talked to him (Monday). Our relationship just keeps getting better and better.”

Handy, a former LSU commitment, doesn’t list any top schools. He does hope to narrow his focus in the coming months.

“I’m going to take my time, take some more visits,” Handy said. “I don’t have any top schools, but I’ll probably release them over the summer sometime.”

Rivals ranks Handy, who stands 6-foot-5 and weighs 273 pounds, the No. 4 player in Mississippi, the No. 14 strongside defensive end in the country and No. 128 in the Rivals250.

No idea who it ends up being but I think AU will land a strong DL class this cycle. Tons of top guys giving AU a look

KN says that AU will visit 3* TE Luke Deal today. He's expected make commitment this Friday. Notre Dams is visiting him today as well & Michigan will visit Thursday. Lindsey & Porter are expected to make the visit. KN says Wiltfong sources believe Clemson has fallen off again & that KN's intel believes this is an AU/ND battle. Nix is recruiting Deal hard for AU as well.

The Clemson thing has been weird with Deal. Visited there a bunch but either doesn't like what they are selling or they are slow playing him. Either way, I want this dude bad. Could start day 1 next season

How many 5-stars could Auburn land? (247)
quote:

Landing a 5-star recruit is a big deal. For starters, it often means you’ve scored a big-time talent. Beyond that, it’s also an attention-getter to fans and other recruits. While not every 5-star lives up to the hype, it’s still an awfully big deal when a program signs one.

Since Gus Malzahn was hired after the 2012 season, the Auburn Tigers have signed seven 5-star recruits in the industry generated 247Sports Composite. In the current cycle they are likely to add to that total. But how many additions will there be? That’s the question.

As of now, one 5-star recruit — linebacker Owen Pappoe of Grayson (Ga.) — is on the commit list. But the Tigers might not be done. Auburn is in the mix with several other 5-stars. With some, the Tigers’ chances are greater than others as you’ll see below.

Which 5-stars potentially could be added to the class? Here’s a look …
