I really need some help with an opportunity I have in front of me and my family. I have been offered a job in Savannah Georgia they will pay for moving expenses and it’s to run an office in my field which is HVAC. I am from Mobile and I have never lived any where else. On paper it’s an opportunity I would be an idiot to pass up but it’s coming together really fast. Just need some advice on the area and if anyone else has done something similar. TL DR I’m being a pussy I’m sure.
Well guys and gals we did it. I am currently sitting in our empty apartment in Richmond Hill. No regrets as of yet.

personally I do not know anything about the area and cant help any. But i will give you advice from my own personal experiences.
One of my regrets in life is that I pretty much stayed in the same area all of my 50 years. If I had it to do over again, I would have moved around a bit.
And Savanah is close to the beach so there is that.

Not sure I should be one giving advice but to me life is about taking chances, embracing change and stepping out. That attitude will give you plenty of highs and lows. Don't sign up for safe it is boring.
Savannah is actually a great city. I would never search for a job there but darn sure would not shy away from a great opportunity in that city. Best of luck with your decision.
edit...if given the choice I would live in Savannah over Mobile. My opinion could be biased because I grew up in GA and absolutely love the Beaufort SC area just north of Savannah.

I had an offer to work for the ACoE out of college. Taking over for a good friend who was returning to get his master's at Auburn. There is a lot of good in Savannah, you just have to choose your spots carefully.

Savannah is supposed to be a great place.
I don’t have kids, but my initial question is how old are they? Much easier if they’re infants/toddlers versus middle school or high school.

Savannah is a fun city. It's growing and so are the areas around it. Culture is pretty much the same as Mobile.
No Mardi Gras though

Do it brother I promise you won’t regret it with the way you described this opportunity. Life is about taking chances. Time to get out of Mobile.

Wife and son are on board and definitely would not even consider it without them Son is 8 by the way does really well in school here. We have him in private school because I would never ant him attend public school in mobile

Nothing more beautiful than the Gulf sand and beaches but the low country mud and creeks have an appeal as well. Better for shrimping and fishing I guess but they both have benefits.
Savannah does not have Mardi Gras but their St. Pattys Day Celebration with the river flowing green is pretty good.

Private school will probably be your choice in Savannah as well as Chatham County is very similar to Mobile's public schools. Savannah is an awesome city though.

Last big move we made was when my oldest son was in his first year of middle school and my youngest was last year of elementary school. The boys adjusted well. Took the youngest one until PE class on his first day, the older one took a couple of months. We moved to an area that required me to make a 45 minute to an hour commute to find the right schools. We went public but it had a price. Worked out great. I set my schedule to head into town around 430AM to beat traffic and it allowed time for some great workouts in the city. Plan ahead and make the best of your plan.

Like most have said take a chance. When I met the wife she lived in Nashville and i was in Bham. Moved to Nashville, stayed for about 3 years. Her work then took us to Denver for about 4 years. She got a great job offer here in NE Ohio. She is from Ohio so it worked out well. It was really fun gettin out of AL after living there for 30 years and seeing the rest of the country.

I live in Savannah, what area are they looking to place you? In savannah or outside, like pooler or garden city?

Moving is a very interesting proposition. You move away from family, friends, church, you have to find new doctors, dentist, barbers... Does your wife work? There is no simple answer, but for me 6-7 hours from home was my limit. Far enough to be away, but close enough to get home for major events, etc. You would be looking at 7:45, so right on the edge.
If it is a great opportunity, go for it...

Valid point. I left home at 17 and when I go back it is a major "event". Extended family is a consideration for many but when I return to the city where I was raised (home is somewhere else now) it makes me smile that it was not a major consideration for me. Was damn determined to escape that mill village :)
