The foothills of the Appilchians and sugar sand beaches that are overrun with lsu flags in the summer. Gotta love it. As a resident of the Birmingham metro area, I can be in the smokies, gulf shores/the emeralds coast of Florida, Atlanta, New Orleans, and Nashville all under a 5.5 hour drive. Maybe not the epicenter of cultural greatness but I can be anywhere and do just about anything in my backyard.
You do realize that most of the fun things in "your back yard" require leaving Alabama?
ps Is speling not taught in Alabama schools?

So what. You have to leave Louisiana to do anything other than New Orleans (which is cool and unique for a weekend or short visits). Other than really good inshore/deep sea fishing and New Orleans, there's actually less to do in Louisiana than Alabama. Literally every other outdoor activity (deer and turkey hunting, bass/bream fishing, hiking, camping, rock climbing, recreational lakes for boating/swimming, beaches, golf courses, even snow skiing, and proximity to Atlanta and Nashville (both within 3 hours of B'ham/Tuscaloosa) and only 5 hours from the mountains of East TN/Western NC is superior in Alabama as compared to Louisiana. I happen to love the NOLA area and inshore fishing but those are literally the ONLY two things better about Louisiana than Alabama.

No, but spelling is.

I have plenty of fun in Alabama but it’s all relative. For somebody like you that hasn’t traveled much, a ghastly 5 hour drive across a state line might be too much to ask for. The world is my playground, what can I say.
