Maybe we (maybe just me?) were too hard on Tanner for the miscarried coaching search. No, he didn't get his two top choices, but the two he whiffed on ultimately ended up at the jobs they both desperately wanted.

He later interviewed the future head coaches of Oklahoma and Oregon, and ultimately settled in on a guy who is exceeding expectations and is a darkhorse SEC COTY candidate.

The administration (and the football program specifically) is in decent shape, especially compared to the rest of the conference.

I think the state of where the SEC is right now with all these coaching changes and people running around like chickens with their heads cut off because of Saban.

Is this some kind of record of coaching changes in a year in the conference?

This. I have no doubt Herman would've bolted after a year or two as soon as someone else came calling, setting our program back even more. Plus, he isn't exactly off to a blazing start at Texas.

I knew what this thread was about before opening it. And I completely agree that it turned into a solid hire for both UGA and USC. Here's to not having to worry about hiring a good coach this year

I had no problem with the way he handled the search then or now. He clearly wanted Herman, who was the hot name at the time and was thought to be locked up until we shite the bed against the Citadel. In hindsight we probably did luck out on that, like it was stated by others, Herman would have left us for Texas. Smart was the smart second choice, and we forced Georgia's hand with Richt. Really nothing we could have done to land him once Georgia saw they had to hire him or lose him to us. Muschamp was a good fit for here, and I think we'll be very happy he ended up here.

My only gripe with Tanner on the coaching search is why Muschamp was not made DC and HCIW the year before? I don't know the details of what all went down, but that would have given him a year on the staff to build relationships with the state high school coaches and given him a feel for the players on the roster. Not only that, he'd have been a million times better as a DC than Hoke was.

Let's not sugarcoat this, Muschamp was a safe hire. If he can't get us close to the success of 09-13, he can at least hold the fort until we hire the next coach. That's what Tanner was banking on after whiffing on the other candidates.

This was ultimately HBC's call, I believe. There were plenty of people pushing for this back in 2015, but Spurrier's refusal to make the necessary adjustments was one of the first signs he was packing it in.

Maybe he chose Auburn over us and didn't want to work with Steve Spurrier? Even if it was that one year.

The only thing Ray Tanner screwed up on with the coaching search was the Rich Rodriguez thing.

Other than that, Tanner really did fine and did not really deserve the criticism he received.

And it goes without saying that Tanner doesn't get all the credit for the AD's success but as a department as a whole we have some pretty good teams. A fair share of them are constantly ranked in the top 25 and our women's soccer team is in the Final 4 as we speak.

Compare that with UT who I believe have most their programs finishing 12th or worse in conference.

The difference in stability, competence, and competition between the USC and UTK athletic departments could not be more stark right now.

No, we aren't where we want to be in football or baseball, but we're lightyears ahead of the Urange right now. Sports talk here in Chattanooga is hysterical right now.
