There is nothing special here. OM would usually give the release to anyone. In some cases there are restrictions, but no one cares about restricting him at this point. It's up to the NCAA to decide if he has to sit or not. OM has no part in that.

Yeah, it's not like this is a release of an All-SEC QB or something. Plus, if a school doesn't release, it's a terribly selfish and vindictive look.

I thought he redshirted this year so he wouldn't have to sit out right?

Transferring players need a release from their school, or else they have to sit out an additional year (on top of the NCAA mandated year). So if a school didn't release a player, they would face sitting out two years. Which is a way for schools to make sure their players don't transfer to a rival (it's pretty common for schools to refuse to release a player within the conference, etc.)

Now that OM has released him, to avoid sitting out at all, Anderson would need a waiver from the NCAA (which I believe is hardly ever granted). Sounds like his lawyer will argue he deserves the waiver b.c Freeze misled him about the exent of the coming sanctions.

I would think unless we get the 2nd yr bowl ban, the NCAA won't allow Anderson to transfer without sitting out a year. That sets an interesting precedent if they do. How many kids would be hiring lawyers because they were "misled" about playing time, or what their role would be, etc... Not sure the NCAA wants to start that.
