Buyouts exist for every coach. It's not like Orgeron got some ridiculous buyout. $8M after year 1 is very low considering the market. There's really nothing questionable about it. You dont sign coaches without buyouts these days, and his isn't even his salary guaranteed or close to it.

You're erroneously considering the overall market vs. Ed Ogeron's market...which is/was SOLELY limited to LSU. No other school in American did/does want to pay Ed Ogeron what LSU is paying him. He had ZERO negotiating leverage over LSU if he wanted to to be a power conf. HC.

It's ridiculous not so much because of the number, but because it wasn't necessary. What was Ogeron going to do if LSU didn't agree to a buyout? Go get paid $3.5 mill per and the HC job from NO OTHER SCHOOL IN AMERICA?

Yes...when those coaches have negotiating leverage. Tom Herman, Nick Saban, Harbaugh, hell, even PJ Fleck know they are in demand. They can tell someone who wanted to hire theme "either agree to a large buyout or I'm going somewhere else." Ogeron doesn't have that luxury.

Maybe Ogeron was never going to get fired after year 1. But why unnecessarily tie yourself down financially if it turns out you had to do so?

Again, quite literally all these coaches have buyouts, does anyone want EVERY single coach? No. It's just part of what it is. We weren't going to sign Orgeron to a $3.5M yr/5 year deal with no buyout or something like a $1M buyout. Some things always go by market, this is the case here. Of course nobody likes it, but it is what it is.

I also went to Georgia Southern and we just fired our head coach who had a $1M buyout, at Georgia Southern. Trust me when I say absolutely nobody was banging down this guy's door to be HC after 1 mediocre season as DC at Colorado State. Yet he ended up with a nice buyout for a guy nobody wanted.

People think of buyouts way too single minded. It's not just about that coach securing himself, it's about a securing his assistants and recruits as well. What recruit would want to play for a coach who could easily get canned with no repercussions? Better yet what assistant coach wants to come into a volatile situation like that? We wanted top coordinators in the country to stay on with Ed, why would they do that if they feel he's going to get fired after 1 season with no buyout then they are out of jobs too?

We're you involved in the negotiations. How do you know what was necessary. If anything, it helps recruiting.
