Saban gets the QB he wanted, Brees and if Mike Shula had listened to Mal Moore and made some changes to the staff and turn over play calling. He took the advice of Ray Perkins and it led to his demise.

Yeah that bit of the story is so often overlooked. Mal Moore went to Shula after the 2006 Iron Bowl and said you gotta make changes on your staff and you have to hire a real OC to call plays. Shula had hired friends and former coaches like Dave Rader who was his QB coach at Bama in the mid 80s and who was a freaking cell phone salesman at the time Shula brought him back to Bama. Anywho, Shula flat our refuses to fire anyone or make any changes so he is canned. I dont know about the Perkins part. So had Shula not made that decision Bama does not get Saban and we would have been an annual 8-10 win team for the last decade likely with no SEC, much less national, titles.

Word has it, that Shula asked his former coach, Ray Perkins, about whether he should take Coach Moore's advice. Supposedly, Perkins told him that " no way will they fire you! You are a BAMA man, former player. No way will they fire you! It's your program and you make the decisions!"
Whether it really went down that way or not, Shula was stubborn about it.
