What so toxic about allowing universities to control their third rights.
This means a school can put their product on an open market. Ask West Virginia how they feel about having more money than their ACC counterparts. I believe only university in their region that will bring home more once they receive a full share will be Maryland who is in the BIG.

David Boren, OU president, said that if OU will realign conferences it will be because of academic reasons plus Oklahoma's connection with California.
OU and Boren knows they have a market in California as a lot of cities in California's Central Valley have what they call Okievilles. Even in forms of speech these Californians who left Oklahoma 80 years ago have maintained a connection with the state.

Nothing

Alabama, Kentucky, and Ohio State all control their Tier III

However all 3 are smart enough to pool their Tier I (major networks) and Tier II (conference networks) to enhance their Tier III (school controlled). Where the other four P5's figured out early is multiple schools limit the down when the primary schools are in down cycles. If you have say a 12 team conference (which allied a CCG) then you need 3 alpha schools so 1 will carry the load in any given year.

Alabama and Kentucky (both now JMI if memory serves) both pull in about 15 million per year in their Tier III but as conference leaders knew taking a bit less on Tier I and Tier II for the conference smoothed out their cash flows. Big point was they gave up the ego issues of there singular for the cash flows of the many. Much smarter long term except you have to keep the ego in check, austin and to some extent norman, never got this.
