The "Mississippi State roster is full of 2 and 3 stars" myth...

Most are ignorant when it comes to State, and think of them as the MSU of the 2000s, rather than a program that has gone to 8 bowl games in a row during a historically strong period for the SEC West.
The Mullen Playbook is to sign every blue chip Mississippi prospect we can get (Ole Mi$$ has made this difficult lately), grab the occasional out of state 4*, sprinkle in 4* MS JUCO guys, and fill the rest of the class in with overlooked high 3 star LA, Alabama, Florida, Texas, etc. guys.
Here is the MSU Defensive 2-deep, with their highest recruiting ranking and national positional ranking from the 3 recruiting services.
Defensive End:
1. Fletcher Adams (RS.S0)- 4* - #12 SDE
2. Kobe Jones (RS.FR)- 4* - #23 DT
Nose Tackle:
1. Jefferey Simmons (SO)- 5* - #2 SDE
2. Braxton Hoyett (RS.JR)- 3* - #65 DT
Defensive Tackle:
1. Cory Thomas (RS.JR)- 3* - #24 SDE
2. Tre Brown (RS.JR)- 3* - #8 DT(JC)
Outside Linebacker:
1. Marquiss Spencer (SO)- 4* - #19 WDE
2. Montez Sweat (JR)- 4* - #3 DE(JC)
Middle Linebacker:
1. Dez Harris (RS.SR)- 3* - #87 ATH
2. Erroll Thompson (RS.FR)- 4* - #15 ILB
Middle Outside Linebacker:
1. Leo Lewis (RS.SO)- 4* - #1 ILB
2. Willie Gay (FR)- 4* - #4 OLB
Outside Linebacker:
1. Gerri Green (RS.JR)- 4* - #20 OLB
2. Traver Jung (RS.SR)- 4* - #2 OLB(JC)
Cornerback:
1. Lashard Durr (SR)- 3* - #3 CB(JC)
2. Jamal Peters (JR)- 4* - #2 Safety
Safety:
1. Mark Mclaurin (JR)- 4* - #12 Safety
2. JT Gray (SR)- 3* - #47 ATH
Safety:
1. Brandon Bryant (RS.JR)- 3* - #47 Safety
2. Jonathan Abram (JR)- 4* - #2 Safety(JC)
Cornerback:
1. Tolando Cleveland (RS.SR)- 3* - #44 CB
2. Chris Rayford (RS.JR)- 3* - #38 CB
That's 13 Four-star plus guys on MSU's defensive two deep. 10 of our 14 front 7 two-deepers were 4-star plus guys.
This defense is not "made up of 2 and 3 star guys". Not to mention high 4 star guys Chauncey Rivers(Former UGA player) and Brian Cole(former Michigan player) that enrolled in December from Last Chance U(EMCC) only to be ruled academically ineligible last month, they will redshirt and be Juniors next year.
This defense can match up talent wise against any team in the country. It is no coincidence that MSU's has the #1 D as well as the #1 defensive efficiency in the country.
Gonna be a good game with LSU, between two of the top five SEC teams, winner will almost certainly have a 10 win regular season.

It is a myth. Mullen is just a terrible coach.

Then why can't you do good most of the time

Bama, Ohio State, Clemson, LSU, USCw, etc have 5 star backups who are just waiting their turn.

I noticed a lot of new "Mississippi State" fans start posting on here at the same time a lot of Ole Miss posters started to go into hiding...coincidence?

The talent gap between MSU and LSU is not nearly what y'all believe it is.

Upvote because you put a lot of effort into it and it was informative. Didn't realize you guys had that much talent on defense. Good luck Saturday, you are gonna need it.

You should have included the 247 composite ratings along with the stars just so we can clearly see. A 0.95 on 247 usually is a lot better than a 0.89 but both are 4 stars

Well that's why I included their specific position rankings for their respective recruiting classes.

Dak's junior year is the only time State has finished above .500 against SEC teams during Muffin's tenure as coach

State's current defense is well-ranked but I would guess if you compared LSU, Auburn, Bama, Florida, UGA, TAMU, and Tennessee's defensive 2-deep, they would have a higher star ranking overall.
Recruiting is numbers game. The more 4/5 stars you get, the odds favor you to have the best players bc you have the most "physical talent". In the SEC, physical talent is paramount on defense bc unlike offense, you can only scheme so much to be consistently effective.
In a vacuum, thanks to variance, MSU can have a better defense than LSU and the other recruiting elites bc physical talent doesn't always manifest itself to in-game production. Bust rate, coaching, scheme, injuries all factor in.
The odds say this is not the norm though.
