I'm withholding judgement until after this weekend. I believe Georgia is clearly at the top of the division right now, but I wanna see'em romp Notre Dame.

SC at Mizzou is going to tell us a lot about both teams. Mizzou may not be as bad on defense as they showed .... but their bar is pretty low right now. Still, they can score points and I need to see SC's young D come out of the gate a little faster - which I believe they will this Saturday.

I didn't get to see much of Vandy or Kentucky. Either of them could play spoiler in the East this year but from what little I did see neither are world beaters on either side of the ball. No real bad weaknesses, but no real good strengths either.

Florida is a real enigma. They've got players but I'm really starting to question their coaching. Given, they were short some players and their chemistry is waaaaaay off but still ... I guess we will not start seeing the real 2017 Gators until they get some issues off the field ironed-out.

Tennessee is never going to be a powerhouse under Butch. They'll be a good team, they'll have the potential to beat anyone on any given Saturday, they've got talent ... but they don't seem to play with the excitement and energy they used to play with in their haydays.

If I had to rank the division right now it would look like this ...

Georgia

Tennessee & South Carolina

Kentucky & Florida
Vandy

Mizzou

... and it's liable to be very fluid in the East this season. Things could change dramatically week to week.

I mean the division is not bad by national standards, but it's not good by SEC standards.

It is getting better right now though ... young players mainly. Coaches at Vandy and Kentucky are as good as they've had in awhile. Can't tell much about the guy at Mizzou just yet but if he is defensive minded you have to believe he'll get that ship righted eventually. I like mUSChamp - he's a perfect fit for SC but I'm biased. Butch is below Tennessee standards IMHO. Great recruiter but too much of a cheerleader and a shitty in-game motivator and manager. And McElwain ... he's just doesn't seem like a good fit at Florida. I'm not sure what it is about him but he has this air about him that seems out of place in Gainesville IMHO. I'm really not sure he is going to be able to handle the heat coming his way over the course of the next two seasons.

Anyways ... the East is not a shite show by national standards but it is definitely not up to SEC standards.

I actually do look for a lot of improvement from the entire division as this season moves along though.

You didn't miss much. Kentucky got a lead and proceeded to wait out the clock by running the wildcat formation into a 9 man front for 2 hours. On the bright side for Kentucky the defense was able to hold onto that lead against a C-USA team.. so improvement?

Agree with everything that you said for the first time in my 6 years otb.

I've gotta say that I agree with this more than anything else though.

Nailed it.

I'm in wait and see mode on my dawgs. Defense looked all world but it wasn't a great offense they were facing... ND OL, WRs, and mobile QB should be a much better litmus test. Fromm handled himself well in an unexpected situation. Let's see how the next several weeks go. By the time week five rolls around we should have a much better idea on the east. For now, it's a lot of speculation on potentially deceptive samples.

I do think the direction most of the teams in the East are headed towards is positive. Kentucky and Vanderbilt seem to be building something. USC is getting its second wind after Spurrier hung you guys out to dry. Georgia is recruiting well and if they get an OC could be a real nightmare.

I'm a bit shaky on Missouri. I really expected a lot more from their defense this year. As for Florida...

Two time defending division champion and I'm getting the dreaded stench of death about them. The defense is still good, but the offense is the drizzling poo.

They have the talent to play with anyone but it just looks like a team that is on the verge of a complete collapse.
