I may be off base here, but it was originally to allow more of the state access to games. Southeastern Arkansas is literally 3-400 miles from campus.
Nope, you hit the nail on the head. Not that long ago it was not an easy drive up to Fayettevile from the rest of the state. NW Arkansas had a small population and was fairly isolated from the rest of the state.
Now its an easy, if a bit long, drive up there and the Western half of the state, especially NW Arkansas, has grown like a weed.
Little Rock is the last holdover from the old days of football. Ole Miss and Moo State used to play a lot of their big games in Jackson, Alabama at Birmingham, and so on across the country.
When we play our last game there next year it will be the end of an era for not only Arkansas football, but for college football.

I mean ya its far, but its only like 40 minutes further than what KC and STL people have to drive to the games. But I guess being in the dead center, it makes some sense.

It used to be necessary to play games in Little Rock, but the brand has grown large enough to sustain itself without the need of driving 3 hours to play in front of a half empty stadium. The university loses out on a lot of money each time they play down there, and as others have said, they really only do it for tradition's sake.
Now I'm not a fan of alienating a segment of our fan base, as some think will happen, but like everything else in this country, cash is king. If the Hogs want to remain competitive, they need all the cash they can get their hands on.
And besides, it isn't like the no-show crowd is a first down there, or even a reflection of playing an FCS opponent. Little Rock doesn't even sell out SEC games. Last one was Georgia and it wasn't sold out either.
I hope they do buy out the contract. Time to put this crap to bed.

Playing games in Little Rock is socialism plain and simple. It must end.

The East/Southeastern part of Arkansas used to have some affluence. Now its just poverty stricken towns with big time farming operations.
The fanbase that was once there to fill up that stadium is now gone.

That's a really weird way to look at it.

how so? we are giving away millions to help out our community and state by giving away our football games. It's every bit as socialist as police and fire departments and public schools and public highways....
Technically i support some socialism, but I'm done giving away our Hogs to the poors who cant make a 3 hour drive to campus.

Because it's sports. Enjoy it. Everything doesn't have to be politicized.

i take it you are a Trump supporter living in south arkansas who doesnt like that fact that this doesnt fit your narrative. But carry on, sir. Try to make it up the Hill. Games are much better up there.
Am I wrong in assuming that MOST of our southern brothers actually want to play in the big boy stadium?

I'm a left-leaning independent living in the Midwest that received a bachelors from the University of Arkansas. But you were close.
And I'm 100% for playing all home games in Fayetteville. But I've said my piece so I'll STFU before I start a political discussion based on my bitching about political discussions. Let's get back to how the program is falling apart, the fan base has given up, etc.

This is pretty much an indictment of the Arkansas fan base as a whole, save those who actually went to the game.
Hierarchy of excuses:
1) Little Rock/War Memorial Stadium suck.
Well, that's just like your opinion man. As Lieutenant Daniel Taylor aptly stated in Forrest Gump, "So, you boys are from Arkansas, huh? Well, I've been through there. Little Rock's a fine town." Sure, WMS is no Razorback Stadium, but it isn't nearly as bad as what people make it out to be. Vanderbilt Stadium and Vaught-Hemingway are turds as well. Hell, as recently as 2013 the bathrooms at Kyle Field had dirt floors.
It's pretty clear that Little Rock games are done for, so why not show up and support your team?
2) The weather looked bad.
Grow a pair Sally. You know where the weather looked bad all week? Houston. Those fine people have the right complain about the weather. If you let a few rain drops keep you from attending a football game, you need help. The weather was fine actually. A pleasant 75 degrees at kickoff. Far better than oppressive heat that I've experienced in years past.
3) But it's Florida A&M.
Yeah they suck and they can't even get their jerseys right. You know who else couldn't get the jerseys right? Vanderbilt in the 2014 opener against Temple. But wait, Derek Mason actually got the okay from the SEC office to wear those stupid jerseys. The jerseys were the only thing he defended that night. Lost 37-7. Yuck.
I don't care if it's Florida A&M or Texas A&M. If it's the opening week of college football, show up.
4) But it's a Thursday/work night/school night.
Are Thursday night games ideal? No. But they are played all across the country at junior highs, high schools, colleges, and in the NFL. Sorry the game wasn't scheduled at your convenience.

It's because Little Rock sucks.
The hate the rest of Arkansas gets from NWA makes me wonder why people even pull for Arkansas. I guess that could be a big reason why people in Arkansas do not take football seriously.
