Damn, really? Well, if I had to get skin cancer, I'd rather have squamous cell than melanoma.

Yeah, I'm in residency and on my derm rotation we sent a guy to plastics to removed a golfvall size squam from his chest wall. He'd been in 26 days earlier with what literally looked like folliculitus only a couple millimeters wide.

It's not common but it happens. Basal cell is usually very slow growing and doesn't metastasize. And you're right, generally squamous cell doesn't metastasize but it can if left to grow long enough. About 10-20% on skin cancer deaths are from metastatic squamous cell.

The fact is though that even with melanoma most people in developed countries do fine, and we're so careful about screening that once you've had a skin cancer and survived you'll probably never die of it because we check you every 3-6 months.
