Coach Stephens has a few strengths that carry him. They are recruiting and holding players accountable/not putting up with BS.

In recruiting he does a good job of finding the best players that are leaving D1 programs and finding players that can't qualify. One could say that it's not very impressive but if it were that easy, why aren't other JCs just as talented as EMCC?

The accountability/no BS part is what holds it together for him. With these type of players, you can't give them any wiggle room or they will never amount to shite. Obviously some kids such as rivers and the tech kid are different but for the most part, these guys are used to doing what they want when they want and need someone to call them on their shite.

His biggest weaknessare is communication. He has no idea how to communicate what he wants or what is going wrong. When shite isn't working, he just starts yelling about not being soft and how they need to play better. He also frequently tells his team they they are more talented so they should be doing better. Never does he ever give actually tips or critiques of technique or game plan. He yells a lot but at the end of his rant, nothing helpful has been said.

Great point. And in one of the earlier episodes, which is the only ones I've seen so far, the editors deftly illustrate this by juxtaposing the words of Stevens'on-camera monologue with his b-roll dialogue with the players...Stevens says something like "you've got shoot straight with them, they don't understand grey area" and in the very next second he's contradicting himself.

He learned how to do it from Tim Hatten, who is coaching HS football in FL now, or was a year or two ago at least. Once Hatten left PRCC and the recruiting rules changed, Buddy jumped at the opportunity a lot won't take. That JUCO league is FULL of elite talent, though. EMCC just constantly has the best QB play, and that sets them apart.

Pretty sure he taught technique to an OL during the game. Footwork/make him go outside, don't give up the inside, he can't beat you outside.
