Not a defense of the acts he committed but "normal" people, especially in this country, lack compassion for others and judge them to feel better about themselves. If he has changed how he views himself and others for the better then that's a good thing because he has evolved.

The pedophile cannot change. He or she can suppress their feelings in the wake of furious social reactions to their behavior but their condition is permanent. Given favorable circumstances with children they still pose a risk.
