Following up on my previous post- for those of us old enough to have kids:

let's say this was your son, who did such a heinous act, and somehow you were able to get the consequences lessened to the extent that this guy received. For the record, I have a son about this age, and NO, he has never done anything like that... BUT for the sake of argument, just consider it.

Wouldn't you stop him from putting himself into this current position? Wouldn't you try to shelter him somehow, guide him to a less public spot?
"Son, I understand you like sports and you're good at it, but let's face this- you have a gigantic skeleton in your past, and that will never go away. We've kept you from prison, but you're never going to be able to have that life now; the best thing you can do is keep your head down and your nose clean. Because if this gets out, 5, 10, 25 years from now, your life will become a living hell until the day you die."

I would be tempted to do my son in personally, myself, if he ever did anything like that. Beat the ever living shite out of him and tell him to hit the road. To answer your question, yes, you would have to keep him out of situations that could make it national news like it is now. He's seriously fricked now, and I'm glad he is.

I have daughters. I would have killed your son.
