FanRag - Heyman : Freeman expected to miss significant time

quote:

There’s no official word as to whether or not Freddie Freeman has a broken wrist, but the expectation is the Atlanta Braves star first baseman will miss significant time.

As a result, the Braves are discussing options at first base moving forward, including outside options. One potential in-house fill-in, Adonis Garcia, is on the disabled list with an Achillies injury, which makes the need to look outside more pressing.

There’s still no word from the Braves, but there was real concern and an ominous feeling Wednesday night after Freeman exited the game in the fifth inning after taking an Aaron Loup pitch off the wrist. Manager Brian Snitker removed Freeman from the game, replacing him with Jace Peterson at first base and Johan Carmago at third.

The Braves tried out Ryan Howard earlier at first base, but he was released after slashing .184/.238/.263 in 42 plate appearances for Triple-A Gwinnett.

James Loney is an interesting name available as a free agent. Loney, 33, was recently released by the Detroit Tigers after hitting .229 with a .387 on-base percentage in 62 plate appearances for Triple-A Toledo.

Another absence being felt is that of Sean Rodriguez, who was signed this offseason by Atlanta to play a versatile role and fill in for Freeman if there was ever a need. But an offseason car accident has Rodriguez likely out for the year.

Freeman was putting up MVP-like numbers early with 14 home runs, a .341 average and 1.209 OPS. The Braves entered play on Thursday 16-21, second in the NL East and looking to complete a 4-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays.

If Phillips can resemble a first baseman in the slightest, then I would bring up Ozzie now and slide Dat Dude over.

I feel like 1st base is probably the easiest position on the field to plug somebody random in at, I mean Jace did well enough last night in his first time playing there. My biggest fear is the FO continues the charade of trying to be a winning team and trades a prospect for somebody to just fill in while Freeman's gone. Although, I wouldn't mind if we used this as an excuse to get Candelario.

The only player that is making the rounds that we MIGHT send a mid-level prospect or 2 for is Jon Singleton. All the other options sound like guys we'd either sign as free agents or pay cash for. James Loney for one.

The Braves assumed this as well back in the early 2000s. That's how we ended up with Wes Helms, Rico Brogna, Robert Fick, etc. That's how we also found ourselves in a situation where we needed to trade the farm for Teixeira.

Singleton is god awful. I wouldn't send the Astros Bonifacio for Singleton.

Ladies and gentlemen, the ATL Sports Board.

ETA: SoG, have you ever wondered what it would be like if you had chosen AU instead of Bama?

This. This is exactly what it's like.

Hahahahaha - as a son of a couple of generations of Alabama grads, it never really entered my mind. However, I can say that sometimes I just want to walk over to my fellow Atlanta sport nut friends who are also UGA folks and give them a big hug. I literally can't imagine.

So who are the best brawlers on the team? I feel like Jace could beat some arse, Flowers is a pretty big dude so he could probably kick an arse or two. Should we consider calling some people up for the impending smackdown? Wisler has those crazy eyes so maybe he fights accordingly, Recker is yoked af,any other ideas?

I say we send Aaron Blair, Matt Wisler, EOF, Bonifacio and Collmenter in first to tire them out and absorb all the big blows, maybe bust up an ankle or two and sideline all of them for a while.

There's no telling what Suzuki can do. Those little yellow frickers are always good for a few surprises.
