Read Hogan's book.

Practice putting the most- especially 4,7 and 10 footers.

Learn to chip. Practice chipping with different clubs until you are comfortable with a favorite.

Learn to pitch. Sometimes you will have to pitch over a bunker or creek.

Develop a consistent tee shot. Starting with a 3 wood may be a little easier.

Have fun. Play forward tees until you break 90, then move back one tee.

This is recreation. Enjoy yourself.

I played today.

Played poorly, but it was better than working.

Obviously it's important to learn how to at least hit the ball, bit if you are trying to improve your score, practicing your putting and chipping is easily the biggest way to improve.

Put yourself near the green in two shots. Get up on the green and two putt for a bogey worst-case vs. getting near the green, blading or chunking a chip and chipping again, then three-putting for a triple.

Obviously it won't be that drastic every time, but I've seen friends who weren't big golfers shave a stroke a hole off their game by finally working on the short game and putting.
