i actually really like it. i haven't seen the last season before this one, but it's a good show. much less mindless than a few of their other originals.

I've caught a few episodes and enjoyed it. Just don't have time to dedicate to any TV series right now. Enjoy.

Does it take awhile to get into it?

It did for me but it picked up. I've only seen the first season. Lots of T&A

One of the better written shows on TV right. Really starts ramping up in Season 2. It weaves together characters from Treasure Island as well as well-known historical characters and does a very good job of doing so.
I hate that it's ending but it's one of those shows that given the timeframe/storylines it covers it couldn't go on for more than a few seasons without losing some quality.
Highly recommend it.

I like Black Sails.
Good characters good production. Realistic historical set up. Some of the characters were real people. Charles Vane, Calico Jack Rackhem, Anne Bonny, Blackbeard. And Long John Silver, Billy Bones, Captain Flint - fictional characters.
Very clever. Kind of a minor Game of Thrones.
And as noted some good t&a. That Jessica Parker Kennedy oh geez she is gorgeous.

Following the real arc of history, the Golden Age of the pirates ended as soon as the Royal Navy appeared even in small force. Once the Brits settled their internal issues with the Civil War, the interegnum and all that, the pirates went away pretty quick.
The pirates favored sloops with maybe 50 guys and a few small guns. The Royal Navy had frigates with 300 guys and 40 guns. So there was no fighting the Royal Navy.

The original buccaneers were organized by the real captain Morgan who was nothing like the guy on the liquor bottle. He was later the Royal governor of Jamaica. With about 600 very dangerous fighters mostly former Royal Navy, he raided Spanish ports to the tune of $2 Billion dollars in today's money. The Spanish protested to Charles II. And got a big 'frick you' for their troubles.
Morgan does not appear in 'Black Sails'. Not really a pirate he had letters of marque from the Crown. He only preyed on Spanish ships.

I'd say that the appeal for both is pretty similar.

Queen Lagertha from Vikings.

Max from Black Sails.
