Wife quit her professional medical job when we decided to have a kid

Her pregnancy was the happiest time of her life.
Even with our kid here now and all the added challenge/stress/lack of sleep, things have never been better.
Before, both of us came home tired and stressed and she bitched about the cleaning or cooking or whatever.
Now she takes pride and joy in providing a clean home and good meal for her husband.
She is thankful to be able to be home providing care for our baby.
With her focus entirely on family and home, instead of work, she has a newfound respect for her husband being the sole provider for our family.
I have a newfound appreciation for all she does for me and the family when I see what I come home to now.
Everyone is happier. More balanced. Our household is more functional. We understand and fit into our separate roles perfectly.
frick her degree. frick the extra income. frick women's lib.
This is the way it always should have been.

I guess there is something to money not always buying happiness.

My mom did the same thing when she had me. Left her job as a military officer to be a stay at home mother, and I am forever grateful
Aggiebelle actually did something similar when she left the USAF this year--she knew damn well she was taking a major pay cut, but we both wanted to have a family and she wanted a job that was less demanding so she could spend more time raising kids/being a wife (our relationship was hard to manage with us both in the military).
She's so much happier now it's crazy. Even with her pregnancy hormones going bonkers. Best decision she/we ever made.
Congrats, genro. Happy for y'all

Money only buys happiness to a point. It really just eliminates unhappiness. Once you have enough money to live on comfortably day to day and you eliminate real money stress, there is no added happiness benefit. All you can do then is buy stuff to distract from your unhappiness.
This country is full of miserable well-off people trying to fill a void everyday with material gains. And people who are miserable because they struggle to pay the bills. The only content ones are those who are happy with the life they have outside of money concerns (personal, social, family, etc) and can live that life they want within their means. They may be rich, poor, or middle but they know what they want, they have what they want, and they can support it

Timely thread. Wife and I have fricking had it with kid A staying sick from daycare and Kid B getting bad influence from after school care. Close to pulling the plug. But she enjoys her job and neither of us are great full time parents so its a hard call to make. Plus we both have dreams of living on land someday and that won't be cheap.
But man do I want that balance right now.

I grew up in a single income family and have lived in a single income home for almost 25 years.
Everything you said is true. Having a homemaker is the true key to happiness for all parties.
That and a well paying job.

That's awesome TBird. Congrats.
There is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong/inferior about a woman choosing the home life. Being the bringer of life and the caretaker of the family is, like, the greatest thing you can do

Women should stop caring so much about what other people think. There's no shame or pressure if you don't give a frick about their opinion.

It's not really 'other people'. Like it's not Susie down the block being a judgmental twat. It's the mass culture put forth by our education, media, politics that tries to dictate our society's norms. It's deep and ingrained in them their whole lives

Easier for us say (as men) than girls, however, there is something to be said for teaching women to stand up for what they truly value, whether or not that meets the prevailing culture of modern times. Nothing wrong with the woman being the breadwinner (hell, Aggiebelle and I have taken turns assuming that role since we've been married). Also nothing wrong with a gal wanting to be a housewife--that shite ain't easy, and it takes someone secure in themselves to commit to something that doesn't come with the tangible/monetary accolades and recognition of working outside the home.

This is becoming less personal and more general and political which I planned
Not talking about my wife or any one woman in particular but overall it's definitely tough. Imagine the reaction from plenty of parents, teachers, or the mass media if a little girl said she wants to grow up and be a homemaker and have lots of babies and clean and cook for her husband. In pop culture this model is lampooned and outdated amd misogynist. Rarely shown in a positive light in tv and movies, all the focus is on strong indepedent career women. Third wave feminism kicked off in the 60s with The Feminist Mystique, a book entirely about shaming the housewife
Generally I think a lot of women in this country are so unhappy denying their true instincts for this life because it's been beat into them that it makes them weak and lesser-than. And that pride will not let them overcome it and it's sad

Much truth to that, from what I've seen.
