Should Chaney stay or should he go? (Long)

A lot of people have been calling for Chaney to be fired this year. Here is why I think those calls are way too premature.
1. Kirby Smart hired him.
Kirby sees something in him and wanted him. that should be good enough for all of us. Kirby should fly high, or sink low based on his people, not our opinions.
2. Our offense improved under him. (Keep in mind, while these improvements are small...they were done with a weaker OL, butterfingered WRs, 2 hurt RBs and a freshman QB....and the offense STILL improved)
Rushing-
2015-2498 yards 22TD
2016-2486 Yards 18TD
Passing-
2015-2406 Yards 14TD
2016-2515 Yards 16TD
Keep in mind, the defense when Kirby was criticized was
the Oline was bad....WR's dropping passes...freshman QB...2 hurt RBs, we should give Kirby a chance to get his own players in here. (These are all legitimate, btw) Those are all offensive problems that Chaney had to work through, too. If we give Smart a pass based on these factors, then we should give Chaney the same pass.
3. Chaney and Pittman, (From what I gather) are pretty much a package deal. You fire Chaney, Pittman will follow soon after, probably. Let's give Pittman and Chaney a chance to get their big linemen in here and see what happens.
4. Chaney has had success at other institutions. He has been criticized by Arkansas and Tennessee fans, but he had passing success at Tennessee, and running success at Arkansas. At the time Tennessee did not have a strong running game (They criticized him for falling in love with the pass)...and Arkansas did not have a very good QB. To me he went with his strength and was good at it. Georgia should have a strong cast on offense both passing and running over the next 2-3 years. It should be interesting to see what he can do with talent all around offensively.
Yes. I realize he is overweight. Bad reason to fire a coach or criticize him. Yes. I realize he seems to run the ball straight up the middle to a maddening degree, and the offense seems to have lacked a bit of imagination. However, I chalk a lot of that up to having a bit weaker OL, a freshman QB and drops by the WRs.
5. We do NOT need 4 OCs in four years. Recruits like continuity. (Yes, they also like good OC's )
But Chaney has a good reputation and we are pulling in a very strong offensive class, especially at the OLine.
BUT...the main reason goes back to my first point. Kirby wants him. That's good enough for me.
I will criticize a coach when deserved, but Kirby is killing it on the recruiting trail, and I think we will see a steady improvement with in game decision making on his part. Let's not get so trigger finger happy that we chase off every coach without giving them a fair and honest chance. I think next year we will see a marked improvement in our offense.

He's on the hot seat but next year is make or break

Give him a second year to see if the year 2 system magic kicks in.
If we struggle anywhere near this badly offensively next year, wrap him in cheesecloth and send him down the Chattahoochee.

This. No way I would fire my OC after his first season with me unless it was just unusual circumstances. Frankly, I would like to see a completely difference offense but for now we have 5 star pro-style QB, Eason, and Chaney is a pro-style offense OC so let's see what he can do next season. The main thing we need is better OL play.

Agree with you and Branch, next year is the key... No ticket, no laundry if we don't improve significantly..

The offense scored two more TDs in 2015 than 2016. I don't see the improvement. Or are you talking about the 100 or so more yards that didn't amount to anything?

You have to see Eason develop in Year 2. He looked like crap in the bowl game, even regressed from earlier this year. Basic stuff like throwing off the back foot when he doesn't have to, throwing into double coverage, not getting into the progression at all. Bad decisions in general. Personally, I think he's really been set back by the o-line being a total sieve so he doesn't trust that he will have the full 3-4 seconds to set up and throw. But he really hasnt made visible progress since Tennessee. Chaney will get fired if he cant develop a 5-star QB in year 2.

I think most fans are on the same page of "next year he better show us something or he should be fired", and that's where I am.
I've tried to stick up for him and acknowledge that he has a TRUE FRESHMAN quarterback who has never seen defenses in washington like he has in the SEC. I realize that our offensive line is as bad as it's been in about 13 years. IT IS AWFUL. You can be the best OC on the planet but if your RBs don't have anywhere to run and your QB is being flushed out of the pocket in 1.5 seconds every pass play there's not a ton you can do.
Wiht that said, I also have eyeballs and can see that his playcalling is absolutley retarded a good bit of the time. Anyone who has watched a UGA game lately can see that we're probably running up the middle on 1st down. We RARELY run sweeps to the outside, which is what UGA was practically built on. We have barely run a screen all year. When we put mckenzie in motion, we're probably handing him the ball.
It's really a tough spot. He absolutely HAS been dealt a rough hand for year 1, but at the same time he hasn't played to our strengths and is damn sure not doing the best job possible. So I'm on board with the prevailing opinion of he better show improvement next year or he needs to be shown the door.

Considering the circumstances? The OL, WRs, Freshman QB? I would say he must have done an amazing job considering those limitations. Did I get frustrated with the runs straight up the middle? yes.
I'm surprised that Kirby gets a total pass and Chaney gets crucified.
When I criticized Kirby for in game decisions, he was defended based on those circumstances. Why does Kirby get a pass and Chaney gets run out of town on a rail? They faced the exact same circumstances (Save that Kirby was a first year HC)
DO NOT MISUNDERSTAND ME. I think Kirby and the team showed a lot of progress as the season went along. Chaney does deserve some criticism. I am not arguing that he does not. However, IMO, I think Chaney gets a lot of criticism because people from other fan bases "warned" us about him.

I don't know that they didn't amount to anything. They may have resulted in 2-3 TD that won us games. I mean, it's silly to say 100+ yards meant everything or meant nothing. What I am saying is if we say Kirby was coaching at a disadvantage compared to last season because of the OL, WRs drops, etc. then shouldn't Chaney get the same consideration?
I think we will see massive improvements next season with a more solid OL, new WRs in addition to Riley and Wims and another year fo experience for eason.
I guess my main point was to those that were wishing he were fired after this season. Seems very premature considering the circumstances.

Kyle Shanahan's offense looks completely different in year two. I say we give Chaney more time. Hell, half our fans hated Bobo at OC but we averaged 40+ a game.

Too many runs up the middle, for sure. I also saw some stuff that I really liked. Passes to the FB in the flat, for one. More utilization of the TEs. Other stuff.

Some, unbelievably, still can't say anything positive about Bobo.

Are you saying Yards Don't matter? The only thing 2015 o did better was score more vs fcs teams.

Totally disagree with this.

Agree with you. With all of the negatives this team had going this year, for us to have improved our numbers even a little bit was impressive. Is Chaney perfect? No. But for some to want to run him off seems a bit over reactive. I really think at least two more years is warranted....but we should show major improvement in 2017, too.

100 or so yards over the course of 13 games that led to less points. Are you trying to tell me those yards counted for something? That's less than 10 yards per game that led to -1 point per game.

Was this your much anticipated Chaney post? If so I'm thoroughly disappointed...

He got nothing of the sort from me. I was probably the first person critical of Kirby here.

You posted season long stats. Those stats had less points this year than last. That's the whole point of offense, scoring points. The only thing the extra yards are good for when they don't end in more points is threads on the internet showing some semblance of justification for firing Richt to hire Kirby. Don't get me wrong, Richt's time was up. But we ended up with Kirby Smart and VA Tech ended up with Justin Fuente. And Fuente is making half a million less.
I will say the offense progressed over the course of the season. Kind of. They took a huge shite on the field against Auburn. Eason still can't hit open receivers. But the run blocking improved a ton.
