3 Mikes and probation.

bama only won 1 title between 1979 and the first one of Saban's tenure. if coaching at Alabama is a huge advantage for a coach, why all the probations.
football was a lot different back in the 60s and 70s, and there were less competitive programs back then. i don' tthink a bunch of titles in 60s and 70s means Bama is better place to coach than other large state universities in the modern era.

there is nothing special about Alabama compared to any other large state university in the country.
Do yourself a favor and educate yourself. Look at the history of the New York Yankees and their success as an organization through their history. Then look at the history of Alabama football and their dominance throughout history. Then find another college program that comes as close to being the Yankees of college football. The greatest sports franchises have their down periods, but always return to the top.
Nothing special about Alabama. Indeed.

There have been only 2(maybe 3) football probations in my lifetime, but they both fell between the 1992 title and Saban's arrival.
Alabama has won national titles under 5 different coaches, and that goes back to 1925.

We've only had one coach since 1923 to not record a 10 win season.

ok but i don't think titles in 70s and prior was as impressive as it is today. today there are a lot more programs trying to be competitive in football, and teams pass it a lot more than they did back then.

Well, he's from Alabama.
That said, I doubt he does unless Clemson doesn't pony up if Alabama were to come calling.

I've been told he doesn't want to come to Alabama.
Jay Barker who is friends with Dabo has the same opinion, that hes very happy at Clemson

1970 was about when all Southern teams integrated, and so that's a good point of demarcation. Alabama leads in that time frame as well.

How would any of us have insight into what Dabo would want to do?

i think it safe to say teams are more creative on offense in modern era than they were back then. nowadays you see a team that gives up a ton of points but can still win b/c it has a high flying offense.
and the talent level is more diluted now because of more competitive programs, that is why programs like Tenn, Texas, Michigan, USC, etc have had struggles in past 10 years.

So that invalidates what happened in the 70's?

no, my point is Alabama won a lot of titles in an era when things were different, there were less programs that were competitive. i agree Alabama is one of the better places to coach if goal is to win titles but in my opinion a good coach can be succesful at any large university in the south if he is a good recruiter and coach.
Saban won a title at LSU, then he coached in NFL. he was able to use both to market Alabama to recruits, and then when he won his first title at Bama, he could then use that and the recruiting got even better. it is about the coach, not the school itself in my view.

Saban could have won anywhere, but he wouldn't be winning this much if he wasn't at a place with the facilities and money that a place like Alabama has.

Very true, put Saban at Nebraska and he is bringing in too recruiting classes there and contending for championships with them.

here's a link to Clemson's historic enrollment. LINK
clemson was a small male only military school until 1955.
Clemson didn't top 4000 students until 1960.
It did not top 7000 students until 1970.
in 1981, the season Clemson won its natty, Clemson had 11,000 students or so, about the size of College of Charleston.
