This is an interesting topic, and this was not a problem when I played, however, here is one thing I found.

15.5.6.3.2 Recruited Student-Athlete Entering after Fall Term, Aided in First Year. [FBS/FCS] A student-athlete recruited by the awarding institution who enters after the first term of the academic year and immediately receives institutional financial aid (based in any degree on athletics ability) shall be an initial counter for either the current academic year (if the institution’s annual limit has not been reached) or the next academic year. The student-athlete shall be included in the institution’s total counter limit during the academic year in which the aid was first received.

This indicates to me, that the scholarship can count for the current year, (2016/2017) if the limit (85) has not been reached....OR it can count towards next years limit. (2017/2018)
I'm not sure this applies, or if it helps as far as y'alls conversation is going. Hopefully it does and clears it up for you all.

Good post.

I agree that the new enrollees count to the 85 number.

The question in hand is... when does the 85 number get tabulated.

(Hearsay) 247sports has been saying that teams don't have to get their rosters down to 85 until August. There is "time to process" players from January when early enrollees reach campus and June when the majority of recruits reach campus to when Fall classes start.

Effectively, an early enrollee in January that gets kicked out of school over the summer does not take up one of the 85 spots (even though he was on scholarship for football). Or a sophomore who takes classes in January and "transfers for better playing time" before his junior season in July does not count against the 85 scholarship limit in August.

When these new kids get on campus, the NCAA isn't taking a roll call to make sure that there are only 85 kids on scholarship until Fall classes begin and that number has to be firm.

If one team in the country has over 85 in January or June... then August is the deadline. We shall see.

When I read all the posts in this thread, I find myself flipping sides.
What you all are saying makes sense to me.

You must trolling at this point.

The early enrollee that gets kicked out or leaves doesn't count against the fall number he counts towards the spring number. He wouldn't have been able to enroll if they had 85 players already. Is it that hard to understand?
