The part I take issue with isn't so much the conference championship, rather the HTH of PSU beating tOSU.
If Michigan had beaten tOSU, I don't think there would have been much argument that they would have been in considering the schlacking they put on PSU; even if they still wouldn't have won their division/conference.

Most talking points are subjective. What is objective is championships and head to head.
