Why do teams drop in ranking after losing to a higher ranked team?

Take the Iron Bowl for example. Auburn was ranked 13 and Alabama was ranked 1. Alabama should win.
Why would Auburn automatically drop after that loss? How did losing to the number 1 team prove that Auburn isn't the 13th best team in the nation?
This is just for discussion and has nothing to do with current standings. (I'm not melting)

Ole Miss lost 7 games to teams better than them. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be ranked though.

Because it changes your overall win/loss record.

LSU dropped a lot after losing to Bama. Auburn just dropped a few spots.
Who knows.

This is a really dumb question even for tRant

I completely agree. With all the recent emphasis on rewarding a harder schedule, it defies logic that a team is dropped after a playing a tough game against a higher ranked foe (and usually passed by teams that beat poor teams that week).

So the goal is to simply have the best record? Why even play tough games? AU could go independent and schedule all conference USA teams and get in the playoffs every year.
If team A is ranked 11 and plays every team ranked 1-10 and loses all of them how did we prove team A wouldn't run the table against teams ranked 12-20?

The simple answer is that teams are not ranked relative to their opponent- they are ranked relative to the field.

LSU scored 0 points against Bama at home. Auburn scored 12 in Tuscaloosa. Not rocket science.

By your logic, if Auburn would have won the Iron Bowl then they should jump to #1.
